one-day surgery and cpap

Post by bayourest » Wed Jun 15, 2011 8:27 pm

When I had my sleep study and titration study done in november, the very helpful sleep tech told me if I ever had to go to the hospital to be sure to bring my own machine etc. I have never spent the night in a hospital and I've never had surgery. I do have to have some one-day surgery done and I am wondering about cpap. It's a quick procedure and I wasnt really even thinking of bringing my machine. any advice on this?

I just had out patient wrist surgery.
They had me do this pre admit thing and part of it was speak with anethesiologist face to face. He said to bring my machine, just in case.. Even though a nerve block was planned he said sometimes things change and better to have it handy.
He wrote on the "day of" orders meds to take and to bring cpap from home.

Now the colonoscopy in Jan, they didn't care. Of course all I got was the "I don't care what you do to me drug" for it

I had never thought of my CPAP and how that would work with an anesthetic... so I need to plan that whenever I have to go to the hospital I should have my CPAP with me? Whoa.

No it is the anesthesiologist who needs to know about the OSA because they sometimes have great difficulty putting a tube down your throat if you have it (the throat collapses as soon as you go under). Also if anything goes flaky and you need to stay the night you need it with you.

and sometimes when they don't listen and you tell them about the OSA... the whole surgery gets scrubbed.

I'm scheduled for out patient surgery on Monday (carpal tunnel release). During the pre-admit phone call yesterday, the nurse said she would "turn me over to anesthesiology" and that they may want to bump my time up a little. I haven't heard from them, so I'm guessing they aren't going to do that, or that I will get a call yet today telling me to come in a little earlier. There was no mention of bringing my machine with me. Now I'm starting to wonder if I need to bring it along. (As if I wasn't getting nervous enough about this already!)

I have my "pre-surgical consult" today so I may know more later and will report in!!! (the whole thing makes me very nervous !! ) I did have a colonoscopy several years ago (pre OSA diagnosis) and no one even asked me about OSA etc at that time. I did accompany a friend to one day surgery recently and the anesthesiologist did ask her about OSA (which she does not have)

I have been in the hospital twice since starting cpap therapy. Once was "planned" and once was emergency (ran into a tree!). Anyway, while I was going thru the pre-admitting phase, the hospital lady proudly proclaimed that they can provide me with a machine and mask. No tellin' what they would have gave me! If it is day surgery, as was previously advised, bring your machine just in case. You'll probably won't need it. If you know you will stay overnight, you better dang-well bring it. Also don't forget and extension cord, mask wipes (if you use them) and anything else you use on a daily basis. The medical community hasn't caught up with proper accommodations for us hose-heads!

Hope that helps

Sheriff

I just had outpatient surgery a couple of weeks ago. The pre-surgery info included OSA questions and information. The hospital said to bring the machine with you, but I didn't bother since I was only in for a couple of hours. Everything went perfectly, and I was home quickly. If I was going in for an overnight stay or longer, my machine would be with me, for sure. It was reassuring to see them addressing it in their literature, in questions, and recommendations.

bayourest,
Did you learn anything at your pre-surgery consult today? I'm quite interested as I have out patient surgery on Monday.

When I needed an MRI, my claustrophobia kicked in a big way. Ten seconds after they pushed me into the machine I hollered for them to get me out and I was shaking like a leaf.

So, next time the plan was to use sedation to make me drowsy and get me through it. One of the items on the final checklist was sleep apnea. Yes, I say. They ask me twice more. I keep saying yes. Sorry, they won't do sedation with sleep apnea sufferers. (Apparently "sedation to make me drowsy" is closer to "knock out juice".) I imagine there's no way a CPAP can go into the MRI room because of the intense magnetic fields.

Plan c was to use an Open MRI which wasn't quite as bad and I managed to get through it. Still don't think I could cope with a normal MRI unit.

The one and only time I had an MRI, I had the choice between regular and open--went straight to open.
It was still one long, tedious, BORING experience.
Then again, boring is probably one of the best medical experiences you can have.

Yes boring is nice - the last time «i had something like that done they shot me full of iodine and i ended up in ER - that was kind of boring too - afterwards - waiting to be allowed out.

I have had 2 serious surgeries, one in 2008 and one last month requiring 5-7 days hospital stays. I didn't take my CPAP. They wake you up all the time anyhow so that may have had something to do with it. I had no problems going without it for that length of time. I have moderate OSA however, not severe.

But that is just one of the problems, isn't it? Waking up all the time is not conducive to good sleep. Plus you need good sleep to speed up the recovery.
