Ever Played "CPAP Hookey"??

Post by frostman » Wed Jan 11, 2006 8:49 am

I have been playing cpap hookey for the last few weeks. Cmon some of you have done it also, it was nice not to have a mask on for awhile, I swore I slept better, but my snoring got awful according to my wife. I really wasn't anymore tired then normal, problem I have is I always wake up around three AM for the guy thing, and getting back to sleep with the mask on is sometimes very hard

I just completed my first two months of CPAP, and I only played hookey one night, while I was away from home. That night went fine. Felt well rested, but at that time I was not sleeping well on CPAP because I was trying to become acclimated. Lately, I've been sleeping 9-10 hours a night, which is a little too much.

You must have mild apnea, as I do, so we can get by without CPAP occasionally, I think. But, like you, I think my snoring would return in short order. My snoring was a strong impetus for going on CPAP. My wife says she never hears me snoring, now. Must be wonderful for her, but she insists that I don't have to use CPAP for that reason, if it is the only reason. Nice of her.

I think that when I go on vacation for a week, I'll leave mine at home. But, as long as I am at home, I'll plug in. I figure the more I use it the better off I'll be.

Jerry

Frostman,

I started "on the hose" last May 14th. About a week into it, I got curious as to what a night would be like without it and tried one night. Then, on May 30th I came down with a helluva cold and cough and decided to go off until I got better (or to at least be able to keep the mask on without the terrible coughing I was going through). On June 9th I started back on the therapy and vowed I'd NEVER do that again. I was reverting to pre-CPAP drowsiness and felt horrible. I've endured a couple of colds and a bout with the flu since and haven't slept without my machine. Also, back when I went back on the hose (June 9th), it took several weeks for my AHI to get back down to where it had been before I went off.

NEVER AGAIN!!! (not if I can help it)

Best wishes,

Den

Jerry,

You might find a big difference now, if you try to take time off. Once you get used to the equipment it is hard to take an extended break. One day maybe but not a whole week. I suggest you give it a try before you go on vacation. If you feel less than up to speed, it's better to find out now than when you don't have access for a week and are trying to have a good time.. It really isn't that much trouble to take it on vacation. Just be sure to bring along an extension cord.

what is "the guy thing"?

Post by cmwhatley » Wed Jan 11, 2006 11:08 am

I have never done "the guy thing" at 3am. I feel like I'm missing out on something. What am I missing?

I have severe apnea and do skip nights sometimes. I always regret it.

cmwhatley,

You need a prostate (likely an enlarged one) to participate in the "3am guy thing"

Does this apply to you? If not, consider yourself lucky.

The only night I have missed it when the mask broke. No time off for bad behaver, If I needed a pacemaker, I wouldn't shut it off either, call me a fool.

Once in awhile, I take a nap on a weekend afternoon without the mask, and I always regret it - wake up with a headache and feeling sluggish. It took me awhile to get used to the "idea" of sleeping with a hose attached to my face, but so much feeling better sure makes it easier to accept.

I had a "bad mask night" last night. After waking up the jillionth time because of the gasket flap tickeling the sides of my nose at ever inhald and exhale, I tore the mask off and threw it to the other side of the bed.

Slept about 4 hours. Feel like hammered hog crud. I would lay back down and take a nap but I've still got a headache I woke up with.

Night before last was just about as good as good can get so, I think I have grimmlins on a part time basis.

leslie,

I bet your switch to the Swift made the experience much more tolerable.

Mike, heck, why not take it. By the time I take a vacation, next October, I'll probably be in love with Aura and won't be able to leave her.
