Hello everyone!
I have read through much of the info on this website over the past two weeks. I am in the process of trying to get an auto CPAP. The REMstar auto with c-flex. My distributor that I'm renting from now has given me the run around that they only deal with ResMed brand so I called my insurance company and asked for a list of distributors that they will cover medical equipment for and then called all the numbers and found one that sells RemStar equipment. From everything I have read from people on this site it seems to be a widely accepted and helpful product. Not that there aren't other equally good machines but I'm trying to narrow down all the possibilities to one that will work for me. I also liked the encouraging information about the downloadable data to track how I am doing.
Has anyone else gone this route before with success? I mean you go to see your sleep doctor, they only use certain distributors, but you as a patient and an educated consumer decide to bypass what is told is your only option and find a distributor on your own? I don't want to step on these doctors toes, but if this is a machine I will have to rely on my whole life, I want all the bells and whistles. Plus I don't like the idea of using a machine that has a constant set titration rate. That just doesn't make sense. I don't believe any one of use when we are tossing and turning around in our beds dont' require different rates during the night. I also think a sleep study is a controlled study, it doesn't always reflect what a person needs all night long.
One last question, for those who use the RemStar Auto with C-flex.....what types masks are compatible with it? only masks made by REmStar? I had recently ordered a ResMed Ultra Mirage f/f mask. Is this not compatible with the RemStar, because if so I best not open the package, then I wont be able to return it to CPAP.com.
Thanks for anyone's speedy reply to my q's.

Question about DME's and auto cpap's

Hi Snoozie,
I've been a user and in the industry for quite sometime. I've dealt with almost every machine out there and I believe the Resmed to be one of the best products on the market. Dr. Sullivan, an Australian physician, who invented CPAP therapy started Resmed. I believe Resmed produces the most consistent (and in the case of auto-titrating, the quickest response) therapy of any machine on the market.
It seems to me that everyone else in the industry is playing catch up to their products and innovations.
Just my two cents.
Good Luck!

Suzy:
Unfortunately you have stumbled into a common occurence: A Sleep Lab or Dr directs you to a "preferred" DME, and that DME has signed an exclusive deal with one of the major supplies.
In most states you are allowed to choose your DME.
You should not have any problems with any of the current mask and any of the current APAPs as long as you have reasonable pressure needs. There used to be some problems with a couple vendors machines and mask vent rates at very high pressures (the normal mask venting at high pressure was read as an "excessive" mask leak which disabled the Auto routine; there is a fix for that if it should occur; and I believe that most mask Mfr's worked to modify their mask vent rates at pressure to resolve it).
I would also agree with scgtrman in that you may wish to consider the ResMed APAP as well (nothing wrong with that machine - and a lot right with it); although I would disagree with his opinion that ResMed products have always led the industry (The first APAP that I know about was not a ResMed product, and the early versions of the AutoSet T had issues that other Mfr's never had and some of those other Mfr's had machines that worked a lot better, and sold better too, before the AutoSet T line was "improved"). I will agree that I think ResMed has led the industry in nasal and Full Face mask technology.
