Chinstrap with Opus 360

Post by cowlypso » Tue Jun 07, 2011 11:56 am

Does anybody use the Opus 360 with a chinstrap? How do you get it to work???

I tried the PR premium chinstrap last night. I tried it under the headgear, but it's so thick that the headgear wouldn't fit right that way. Then I tried it over the headgear, but the hose anchor goes right where the chinstrap is suppose to fasten. I tried it in front of the anchor but then the back strap was too short to go around the back of my head, and so the strap slid forward, taking my headgear with it. I tried it behind the anchor, but then it kept sliding off the back of my head.

My leak numbers were better, although I still had some mouth leaks. I think if I could get a chinstrap that actually fit, it might fix the mouth leaks, but I just can't figure out how to get the headstrap to work with the Opus 360 headgear.

I called my DME, and they have two RTs there. I talked to the one that I don't like, and he just told me that he didn't have any ideas, because they don't have very many people using this mask.

Here's what I need in a chinstrap:
1. hypoallergenic (I'm pretty sure I'm allergic to something in the PR premium strap I used last night... chin is still itchy!)
2. compatible with the Opus 360 headgear
3. only cups the very tip of the chin (I had to scoot the chin cup way forward on my chin so it wasn't touching my neck at all because it felt like I was being strangled)

My DME was entirely unhelpful, suggesting that if I couldn't wear the one chinstrap that he recommended, that I should probably just switch to a full face mask. I asked about other chinstraps on the market, and he said that they only carry a few. Most of them are styled very much like the PR strap. The only other one they carry is the Ruby, which looks like it might strangle me, and also looks like it could cause skin problems.

Funny story... I just spent half an hour on the phone with the guy from PR. Took 10 minutes for me to explain that I was asking for a list of materials used in their chinstrap, which has nothing to do with my machine, mask, or headgear. He finally figured out what I was talking about, but cannot find that list of materials anywhere. It's like the chinstrap doesn't really exist. It's not listed on their website, either, as a product they offer. So weird!

I use a '360 along with my papcap. Loce the 360 and it is my primary mask. I put the papcap on, atttach the velcro chinstrap, and then don the mask. I initially had to adjust the headgear straps to accomodate the additional thicknesses of the chinstrap. It is rock solid all night. In the event that I don't have my papcap (poor trip plannng...) the mask does fit pretty loosely and I get far too many leaks (I am loath to adjust the straps and then have to adjust them again when I get home). But that is my pennance for poor packing.

I just switched to the Opus from the Swift FX, mostly because of leaks. The Opus is much more stable for my face and will work well. First night with it was great, second night I had minor leaks. Last night I used the Ultimate Chin Strap with the Opus. While the chin strap is pretty bulky (straps too long and thick material), everything held solid and no leaks. Great thing about the Ultimate is the material. Super soft. I read anther papper's post and you can now get a small Ultimate Chin Strap. Wish I had that chance but will continue to use the one I have with my Opus.
