aerophagia is new to me! :)

Post by yardbird » Tue Jan 10, 2006 9:52 am

Just the last 2 nights for some reason. I haven't changed anything so I'm not sure what's causing it. Sure does make for some entertaining, if not a bit embarrassing mornings!

Anyways... I'm going to adjust my c-flex setting so it doesn't drop pressure quite so much. I think I'm at max pressure drop now (3... I think that's the most pressure drop) and I'm going to try dropping it back to 2. If that don't work I'll try dropping it back to 1. I did a search on aerophagia here and one thing seems to come up several times and that seems to be that even with APAP, it may be the pressure CHANGE with the c-flex that causes the aerophagia. So I'll try tweaking that.

I'm SO glad this board is here. I can log on... search on a keyword... and get enough information to at least know in which direction I can go.

Hey Yardbird,

Aerophagia is sure not a pleasant side affect of treatment. I had it on and off for two months when I began last September. My DME said to try sleep raised more. I think what finally helped was the fact I got my new mask and now sleep primarily on my tummy. Either that or I got used to breathing the gusty 16 pressure in.

Good luck. Let us know if tweaking your c-flex helps.

knocked my c-flex setting down to 1.
No problem this morning.

BUT... did I jump the gun?
I went over 45 days on the new machine with no problem. Then on ONE morning I had obviously been inflated like a baloon. Was it just a single random occurence maybe due to some odd sleep position I got myself into?

DOn't know. But the setting of 1 on the c-flex seems fine so I'll let it alone for a while and see what happens.

Something that works for some (not all), and I can testify that it has at least helped me - is to prop the head of the bed up 2 to 4 inches (I use pieces of a 2x6).

The very slight incline angle is enough for some people's body to automatically "close" the throat to the stomach.

try PAPillow

What worked for me with aerophagia is the PAPillow, because it has a notch for my shoulder (if on side) or neck (if on back), which keeps my head from sinking to my chest, better positioning the esophagus so I don't have air blowing down it.
Try http://www.PAPillow.com, available through http://www.talkaboutsleep.com or other online stores. Shaped for xPAP wear. Double edge pillow is $59, for larger heads or those who prefer a higher pillow. Mini is $39 for smaller head or those who prefer less elevation. Both plus shipping. I have the mini.
I think aerophagia is likely most likely to happen with a new mask or if I temporarily change some sleep behavior - like sleeping with my mouth open or some strange posture or habit yet to be discovered.

I started losing weight and had this problem. In my case, it was that my pressure needed to be lowered. I went from a pressure of 19 to 13 and now sleep like a baby and no more waking up feeling like my tummy is about to explode!
