One handed mask fit

Post by Pugsy » Sat Jun 04, 2011 6:50 am

For newbies or anyone wondering about fitting a mask using just one hand.....the Swift FX is easily put on with one hand.
I know other masks will also allow for just sliding on with no special extra adjustments past the new fitting adjustments.

I have the dubious honor of getting to do this little feat myself for a few weeks. Fell Thursday evening and broke my wrist. No cast yet as it hasn't been "set" yet. Medical term is reduction and I am hoping will just need a little manipulation to get it reduced satisfactorily. Though since I used to work with an orthopedic surgeon, I am not looking forward to it. It won't be fun. I will know more Monday.

Just happened to realize that it probably would have been a good idea to have instructed husband on how to change the nasal pillows. It is tricky enough two handed (connecting short hose to that hole for it in the pillow). Guess he will learn the hard way now. So for cpap users who have spouses or SOs that don't know how to do the routine stuff we take for granted, it might be a good idea to have a little in service. Just in case they might have to do some of this stuff.

I will be around the boards but will limit responses as much as possible due to very limited one handed typing skills.
At least I broke left wrist and I am right handed. So if my responses are unusually brief, you all will understand.

We all hate when stuff like this happens making everything we normaly do so much harder.

Crip, life can be hard enough when everything is working fine.

Sorry this happened to you.

My best wishes.

P.S. I love to read all your posts.

Sorry to hear about your wrist Pugsy! Thanks for making that point though - that a spouse or significant other - if not that a friend or neighbour who knows what to about the little things we do with cpap therapy without even thinking about it until we have to, is important.

Get well soon!

I broke a finger in Jan. It had a full metal jacket for 6wks.
Just as your brain/body did before you were diagnosed w/OSA,
you will adapt. You will find work-arounds and in some cases,
you may find better way to do things.
It may actually be good for your brain, because as you learn
to do things w/out that hand, it will be stimulated in new ways.

All things for a reason.

Thank you all for the well wishes.

My husband is over the road truck driver. Normally home only on weekend. I am so used to doing everything myself out here on the farm I just never thought about this sort of stuff. Guess it is good that I don't wash my pillows daily.
I know that later when pain subsides I will have some grip with left hand finger tips but for now it just hurts too much.

Oh Brenda what bad luck! You will now have to learn to do things with one hand.......I had to learn how to drive with one foot..ya it was my right foot that was in a cast too . The animals soon learned that I was easy to get away from so didn't get their regular brushing. You will adapt my friend and be back to normal sooer than you think.
Cheers
Nan

I had surgery on a hand a couple of years ago. It was out of commission for a week or so - not nearly as long as yours will be. I think you'll be surprised at how easily your mask can go on with only one hand with a little practice. Also, when the pain decreases, you'll be able to use your other hand to some extent. Just remember to stop when it hurts to do something.
