If ResScan says apnea, is it an apnea?

Post by xsara » Thu Jun 02, 2011 6:58 pm

Hey Guys,
been on the hose for about two weeks now. I've finally discovered the reason for my leaks is that I must clean my Quattro FX each night. Last night was the first leak free night I've had in a week and a half.

My question is, if ResScan indicates an Apnea or a Central, does that mean that you most definately experienced that event, or can it lie?
In my case I have UARS. What is a UARS even most likely to show up as?

Cheers!

xsara - That is a great question! I am not one to give an answer but I am going to be watching to see what the more erudite members here have to say. I too have been trying to figure out the "UARS" component. UARS "events" do not show up in the statistical data.

"UARS" - To me it is like asking the question "If a tree falls in the forest and there is no one there to hear it, is there actually a noise?"

I can't answer your UARS question but as far as the apneas, you weren't breathing.
That doesn't mean you weren't awake and fixing a leak, turning over, or adjusting your pillow. I have become aware of when I don't breathe during the day. It happens alot!
If you look at your apneas in the flow line in Resscan, in a 5 minute window, you will get a better idea of what is happening. You may also see events that weren't 10 seconds long, so they didn't get flagged.
To get the flow line, you have to check the little box under where you select days to download. Then in detailed graphs, you may have to click on the graph icon and make sure "FLOW" is checked.
Then when you really want to know what's going on, set up a camera and record yourself sleeping and compare that to the flow line.

If you're awake, any "events" scored are not relevant. The machine can't tell when you're awake and when you're asleep. If you're asleep, it does the best it can given it's particular algorithm to score your respiratory events accurately, but it's not as precise as a sleep study. An example of this is that S8 machines tend to score a lot more hypopneas than the S9 machines. Considering the top notch people in the field can't agree on how to score a hypopnea, the machines aren't going to do any better than that.
In my case I have UARS. What is a UARS even most likely to show up as?
In theory, on 0 centimeters of pressure, you should have less than 5 apneas and hypopneas per hour, not desaturate significantly, and have lots of RERAs or FLs. But you aren't setting your machine to 0 centimeters, so in theory you should have 0 to who knows how many RERAs/FLs per hour, but should have less than 5 apneas and hypopneas per hour. That's in theory. In practice, you'll have to tell us what actually happens. But ResScan is not going to tally your RERAs or FLs and give you a number. So you'll have to look at the FL graph to get an idea of how bad your FLs are.
