no weight loss

Post by hose nose » Sun Jan 01, 2006 2:31 pm

I have been on c-pap for a year now and I thought I would have been able to lose weight. I am in menapause now and I have gained weight. I am totally disgusted with myself. I also have heriditary obesity in the family.I think it did help my bp for awhile, but it seems to go up at times. Has anyone got any suggestions or has this happened to them?

Well, join the party! I've only been on CPAP since August but I've gained about 10 pounds since then. And menopause does not help, does it? It's the pits.

So my only suggestion is the plan I've come up with...I'm joining weight watchers next week. For the umpteenth time. But this time, I guess I need to actually attend those boring meetings with the overly perky and upbeat leaders that drive me so nutty. Because I cannot honestly try to say anymore that 'Oh, I don't need the meetings, I can do this myself". Apparently that is soooo untrue! lol, lol....

And hopefully starting today, I'm doing the treadmill for 30 min. a day. That would be in addition to the tennis that I already play 4 times a week. Figures that if I like something that is physical activity...it would NOT count as cardio or weight loss effort. Tennis is ANaerobic, not aerobic exercise, because of the fact you basically sprint, then stop. I've argued with the personal trainer that hey, she may think tennis is awful, but if it is a good match, MY heartbeat stays pumping for the whole time whether I'm hitting the ball or waiting for it......but unfortunately she must be right, because my body is so used to it now, it doesn't seem to consider it exercise. No pounds are coming off from tennis so I need to add more activity.

If your body keeps getting used to activity, to the point that you have to add MORE activity to keep your metabolism going....does that mean when we are 80 we will be spending HOURS and HOURS on the bikes or treadmills or ellypticals or whatever??? SHHHHH, don't think about it. Just don't think..........

Soooo, weight watchers and cardio, that's my plan. And I have to...have to...do this. I can no longer argue that my weight isn't affecting my health. I actually think my OSA is largely hereditary and I've been showing symptoms of it since my skinny 20's and 30's...but with an AHI of 85, it would be hard to deny the possibility that losing weight would IMPROVE on the situation big time. And my poor feet complain about the extra weight daily, to the point that it is affecting my choices on how to spend the day. Whether I want to face up to it or not...the weight is affecting my daily life tremendously and I have to make improvements or I'll be old before my time!

Oh, that all sounded so good, didn't it? Now, please God, make me be compliant with my New Year's Resolutions this year!!!! PLEASE!

Hello,
My 2 cents worth. I've been on CPAP since Jun 05. About 40 lbs overweight. Am 48 yrs old and praying for menopause, can't wait. I haven't lost alot of weight, but I have lost 6" of body fat thus far. This is what worked for me. I got out my 18 speed bike and started biking again and I also lift weights (girls, I keep telling you pump some iron, it will help). I have a recumbant bike, elliptical machine, and home gym (weights) in my basement now. That's not counting the yard/garden work, walking, ect in nice weather . It has made a world of difference, I feel so much better!!! It's amazing what a little oxygen and restful sleep can do for a body!!!!! Find something you like to do (for exercise) and stick with it!!! We're all in this together!!!! Good Luck!!! Colo Jan, you're in Co Springs with all those beautiful mountains and trails. Do you ever hit the trails or go hiking????

I went into Windows XP, and turned off Sticky keys, having to press the same key over and over should help me lose weight.

I have been on CPAP and have gained the 10 Lbs of weight I lost in a Quad ByPass. Weight is a Bummer.

I need to lose a heck of a load of weight. I really am not gonna depend on finding out if CPAP alone will help. I started yesterday eating better, and it really isn't that hard for me to do, as it is I have to have fast and easy things to make or grab to eat that are actually healthy. No more eating unhealthy choices when I go out. And once we get some xtra money, I gotta pay off our gym bill and rejoin, or join a place with a pool. Swimming is the safest exercise for me because of joint and back probs. I really hope the cpap will help some. But, I guess it really depends on the person. If I don't lose weight, I will never be able to even have a chance of having a baby. If I don't lose weight, I will never have a chance to see if my sleep apnea will improve without CPAP. If I don't lose weight, I will continue to feel worse both physically and mentally.
So, I am jumping on the bandwagon. And, when he have the money, I want to go back to Weight watchers as well, or maybe join TOPS.

Here's to ringing in the New Year
God bless you all

I had also really hoped that CPAP would help me lose weight. Didn't happen.

But it is clearly a matter of exercise and controlling caloric intake!!!! CPAP alone is not going to do it!

I 'm a 49 year old perimenopausal woman I also thought that being on cpap therapy would boast my metabolism so I could lose weight. To no avail though. I 'm following low caloric eating plan & exercising1-2 hours everyday & I 'm not seeing any weight loss. I'm so frustrated. does anyone out there have any suggestions that will help us?

Yep, I have tons of trails and mountains around me....and I rarely hike. My feet hurt soooo badly. They were both broken in a car accident years ago (I was thrown out and landed on my feet), and the excess weight doesn't help them any now. And the human psyche is a weird thing isn't it? I will buck it up for tennis because I like tennis...play like there is nothing wrong and then limp off the court when all is said and done. But l can't make myself buck it up for hiking. Weird, weird, weird. I'm my own worst enemy...

Ah, Lori, you gave me a great laugh! I think I need to wear my FF mask 24/7! That is clearly how CPAP helps you lose weight!

I understand the lack of motivation to eat properly and exercise/be active, but that is truly the only way one is to lose weight. I'm 6'0 and 175lbs, but I have gained 20 lbs over the last 3 years and I myself have trouble staying trim.

This semester was a break, but usually I'll work out 5-6 times a week, both cardio and strength training. Weight loss isn't everything, becuase at some point you will start gaining due to muscle gain (muscle weighs more than fat).

Increasing muscle also increases metabolism, which means burning more calories.

Jan, you need to find a tennis court to hike to.

You can use your tennis racket to fight off the bears along the way.

ahhhh, Wading...

There actually ARE bears between me and the nearest tennis court! Lots and lots of wildlife in my neighborhood....mountain lions too. But mostly your basic overpopulated deer, fox, raccoon, coyotes, and all those lovely creatures.

Not too bad to hike to the tennis court...about 1.5 miles downhill. It's coming back up that hill that's the killer...

I was so tired and all I did was eat and sleep for the past couple of years before Cpap. My sleep doctor said I really needed to lose weight and I agreed. I told him when I got settled in with the machine and caught up with sleep I would start an exercise program. I used to take my Doberman to the dog park and walk 2 miles every day all year long. Quite a few times I'd go twice a day. My dog died and the one I have now is 5 lbs and I can give her exercise in the living room from the couch! Needless to say the pounds piled on pretty quick.

I started an exercise program right before Thanksgiving and then got the stupid cold that lasted forever. So I ate my way through Christmas and promised I would start after the first of the year.

I think we should start a post for support. Hopefully we could have it a sticky one and all of us can post and support each other. I wanted to try Weight Watchers but the cost is something I can't do right now. I truly believe if we talk with each other and read each other's struggles, tips and sucesses it will help us all. Whatcha ya think??? Any one game?
