Result of pressure being too high?

Post by Kotengu » Fri Apr 22, 2011 9:33 pm

I was thinking about adjusting my pressure by myself but I'm reluctant because I'm afraid of setting it too high. So far, I've had no results and I'm getting frustrated. Does anyone know if there are any negative results from setting the pressure too high?

I believe going to high can set off central apneas. If I were you, and wanted to increase pressure to experiment, do it in increments of .5 and stay there for a week. Monitor the results carefully via the software. Keep in mind that you do have sleep debt to pay off. For some, they recover quickly and have a lot of energy right away.....they are the exception to the rule. Most take months and some a year or more to feel great again. I am 7 months into it and still am tired albeit much better in many other respects. Just keep using your machine/mask and most importantly, use the software to monitor your therapy and see if there are any issues that need addressing.

Wow! I didn't realize it took that long. Well, that's good then. The first step is being completely consistent with the machine. That gives me hope though. I'll probably just stick with it a while longer then and see what happens.

If I were you, I'd make sure i tracked my daily numbers to establish a baseline. Then, I'd increase by say .4 and collect data for a week or two to compare. I track my daily numbers plus a subjective stress score, congestion (affects my numbers & pressure), and wt of which I have lost more to lose.

When I fell and injured my shoulder. I had to sleep on my back; as a result, my AHI tripled with apneas showing up typically every night (before had almost none). I use an APAP but that initial pressure can be too low allowing lots of hypops, so over the course of 6 wks I raised it until my HIs started going down. My sleep doc is not concerned about centrals in my case.

PS While I went from bone-deep exhaution to plain old tired in 3-4 wks, I didn't have the energy to exercise until I hit 9 months. I slowly and consistently recovered, in fact still am, since I slapped on the mask Aug 20, '07.

I'm new at this too, but I've researched aggressively and found no credible evidence that a couple cm of extra pressure is going to do you any serious harm. This isn't necessarily true for everyone, but those at risk are probably already in the hospital, so if you're just tired, you can experiment safely. If the increase in pressure sparks central apneas, you'll feel tired, see your AI go up, and back off the pressure.

But unless you're having a lot of obstructive apnea, extra pressure isn't likely to help you either. What sort of numbers are you getting now?
