Help me interpret my data

Post by LXJenkins » Sun Apr 17, 2011 6:18 pm

So here's a snap shot of a typical night for me (just started CPAP therapy a few weeks ago). Current pressure is 10. Any recommend changes or advice? Thanks!

How are you feeling? What is overall AHI and its breakdown (Apnea, centrals, Hyponeas)? How does this AHI compare with your sleep study AHI?

Leak line looks good, couple of small blips but that is common and will happen. Couple of times close to that red line.

A couple of small clusters of events. Are you worse in your back or in REM stage sleep? That might explain the little groupings.

I don't know enough about Flow or Flow limitations to comment on that part.

I am feeling significantly better than pre-CPAP; however, I want to make sure that I'm getting the most out of my treatment. My AHI during my sleep study was a 42 and is now down to between 3.5 and 6 nightly average.

I am not sure where I am worse. However, I'd guess that I'm worse during my REM stage sleep (hence the cluster of events about 2 hours after falling asleep).

Are these results pretty consistant from night to night? I find it interesting that AHI doesn't reflect duration of events.
I don't worry about it if I have a few 10-12 second events. When they get to be 15-30 seconds I get concerned.
Often if you stretch the view out to 5 minutes, you can see where you took a couple of deep breaths before the flagged event compared to events where the flow line just flattens out. I turn over, rearrange the hose, covers, etc so I discount some fo those. You may also notice clusters of "not quite apneas", less than 10 seconds, that add up but don't get counted.

Are you comfortable with the equipment? It took me awhile to find the right bed pillow solution, to get a hose cover, learn when to replace nasal pillows...

If you are feeling better I would only make gradual changes. You might try bumping your pressure 0.2 or 0.4 and see what happens, how you feel and how the data changes.

How much of that AHI is centrals? Looks like on the graph some of those events are black which mean centrals. Could be my eyes though.

If you get more nights with the less than 5 (which is the generally accepted medical line in the sand for effective treatment) then you are probably pretty close to "optimal". If more along the lines of AHI over 5, then yeah, maybe a little tweaking. Only a little though. Watch those centrals. Don't want to make them worse.

Do you use EPR? If so at what number? Some people have reported improvement in their AHI with a reduction in EPR or turning it off. That might be a little tweak to try without raising the 10 cm pressure you are at now.

Good point on the EPR Pugsy. My AHI dropped in half when I turned it off.
I also found that the humidifier caused sinus congestion.
