What's in a name? - Data Viewer application name request

Post by tschultz » Sun Apr 17, 2011 8:40 am

There has been some discussion on a recent program called "SleepyHead" and this forming into something more officially collaborative. We felt that since the program is to be open to the community it is only fair that the community helps to name it.

This is not a request for features at this time, we already have a pretty good idea of a working framework and want to limit the initial feature set to try and prevent feature creep. Other feature ideas will be welcome when the time is right.

In its initial form the software is intended to provide a universal application to do the following
- allow reading and detail viewing of data from the SD card on some of the newer xPAP machines (Initially PRS1 and S9)
- allow additional health tracking (manual entry) and sleep diary logging; blood pressure, weight, glucose levels, medications
- ongoing data storage for summary reporting of daily, weekly, and monthly indexes
- provide easy backup mechanism for SD card copies
- available for Windows, Linux, and Mac operating systems (is already verified running on all these)

We would like a name that sounds friendly but at the same time not too corny.

I had suggested "Somnus" as the name, latin for sleep, but it may conflict with Somnus Medical and is kind of sleep specific. "OpenSomnus" was then also suggested as a derivative of that name. Other names at this time either are a poor fit or fit the too corny category so we won't put them here.

Once we have a list of possible names, a short list will be provided and we can then vote on it in an attempt to make it fair to everyone. If you can think of a good potential name then please share it.

HypnoData Viewer.

Whatever you call it, you are doing a great service to everyone who wants to read their data.
Congratulations.
I am using the Linux beta on Ubuntu. Good graphs.

Thanks for those suggestions. Some cool candidates in there. Please keep them coming

We are looking for a name than encompasses more than just the obvious CPAP side of treatment, and more then just a data viewer. Something positive related to sleep health.

Here are some more random suggestions.

To add to JanKnitz nice idea: DreamMaster, SomnoMaster, SnoreMaster, ApneaMaster. I guess PAPMaster would fit too.

DreamWeaver would of been awesome for sleep software.. but noooo.. they had to take it for some dodgy web development environment.
SleepWeaver, HypnoWeaver, SomnoWeaver/SomnusWeaver

Hypnophile sounds waaay dirtier then the word actually means.

GoodNight, NightBreather, SleepStudio

I've drawn a blank.

You seemed to like "Somnus," but the name is restricted.

How about Somni or SomniData?

I'd love to be a beta tester, btw. I have both Mac and Windows operating systems.
