what does that fancy word for gas feel like
what does that fancy word for gas feel like
I think I have that trapped air you guys talk about. Feels like I have a burp hung up midway of my throat. Even after I burp a little, it comes back, almost a gag me type feeling at times. Only noticed it today, but it is bigtime annoying. Can it last all day?

Aerophagia. Aero = air, phagia = to eat, i.e. swallowing of air.
The results and how long they stay around varies. Some times there is enough to actually cause bloating of the tummy. Sometimes it can move all the way thru and cause gas at both ends.

In health care, that word is usually used for something other than gas or bloating.....totally unrelated to this forum......lars4life: tumescent

Adding to lars4life's excellent list:
rock hard and painful
full to the point that even looking at food makes you slightly nauseated
wishing you could burp or fart like Shrek (or Fionna) even though you're a middle aged woman---and being mad or sad when you just can't get that burp (or fart) you need to get out, out
And yes, alas, it can last all day---particularly when you never do get that burp/fart out all day long.

And you notice the discomfort subsides in the evening... and in the morning, IT'S BACK!

Re: what does that fancy word for gas feel like
How it feels depends on how much air actually got down there. A little will just make you a bit uncomfortable, but more than that can be quite painful (stomach pains, and a feeling of uncomfortable fullness), certainly enough to wake you up and keep you from going back to sleep for awhile. I unfortunately had a problem during an attempted sleep study. I think I got twisted in the wires and hose, causing some odd sleeping position. I was really worried that this would be a regular problem, but I seem to have been lucky so far.
If you have a recurrence, one sleep technician suggested drinking a "little" fizzy soda, in an effort to cause some burping. Some body movements, i.e., bending, etc., might help, too.
Some of us have noticed that the problems can subside after some time has passed. I think several weeks or more is necessary. It's possible that surgery may help.
And yes, it's true that the occasional passing of air (from either or both ends) can go on most of the day. The only good thing is that there won't be much odor.
So I'm told...

Re: what does that fancy word for gas feel like
Be careful with the fizzy soda. For me (at least) it increases the pressure, but does NOT help me burp any more easily. But then I've never found it easy to burp and it's not 'cause I'm modest: Farting I can do, and I need to do that to relieve the pressure from the gas, I will---with mighty little embarrassment too. Just wish I could burp since that way out is much, much shorter.ZeroDigger wrote: If you have a recurrence, one sleep technician suggested drinking a "little" fizzy soda, in an effort to cause some burping. Truly, I was only attempting to add a little humor that did not come across in my posting apparently. I was NOT trying to be smarter or confrontational in any way--something I too, abhore.
I'm sorry that my post came across to you other than what I meant.........

Re: what does that fancy word for gas feel like
I've always wondered if there isn't some technique to allow yourself to burp the gas out of your stomach. I often have a severe need to belch, but can't make it happen. It's such a relief when it happens.
It would seem that there would be some trick, such as relaxing your stomach muscles, a sudden quick inhale, yoga like meditation, etc. to train yourself to let it all out, but I haven't figured it out yet. The only thing that helps a little is to deliberately swallow a little air part of the way and belch it out, but sometimes that backfires and gets stuck, making it worse.
I also think that some of the gas ends up past your stomach and makes you feel bloated, and that's got to work its way out the other end.
