Sommnomed Dental device??

Post by Nelliebear » Wed Apr 13, 2011 3:21 pm

I was just wondering if anyone has tried using a Sommnomed dental device for OSA?? This is not a self treatment item. It is made by a dentist to fit your own mouth. I tried one that was self treatment and returned it because I couldn't fit it effectively. But I really hate CPAP therapy, and after 5 years am looking into other ideas. Thanks!!

I think it all depends on how severe your apnea is and what caused it.

I looked at their website, and of the studies they link to, most of them are using AHI numbers of about 13. So if your initial OSA diagnosis was in the low range, reducing it by 40% to 50% might work for you. If your AHI was in the 40s or 50s, reducing it by 40% or so means that you still have some pretty severe symptoms.

Thanks for the advice. I looked at my recent sleep study results and My AHI was 11 per hour. I have set up a consult appointment for next week with an Oral maxo facial specialist that makes the devices. So, we'll see.

Dental Devices are mainly used on patients with Mild to Moderate Obstructive Sleep Apnea. If fitted properly, they can reduce the AHI considerably. It is not recommended for severe sleep apnea, but, may be used in combination therapy for AHI > 30 or selectively for patients that are intolerant to cpap and comorbidity evaluation. An Advantage of using combination therapy is h2o pressure can be reduced considerably, which in turn can reduce some of the side effects.
Although CPAP is the Gold Standard for Sleep Therapy, approximately 75% of CPAP Users are CPAP intolerant and are looking for an alternative. There are numerous FDA cleared dental devices available depending on upper airway evaluation . Thousands of patients have used oral devices successfully without question. Can not comment on the fitting of your device without physical evaluation. But regardless of the device. If it doesn't fit you won't wear it. CPAP or Oral Device. DSdds Arlington Heights Illinois
