Mask Leaks and Apnea numbers

Post by bob007 » Sun Apr 10, 2011 4:01 pm

Hi guys,

Quick question...would high mask leaks cause your numbers to drop on an S9?

Thanks,

Bob

By drop do you mean your AHI numbers go down??? Leaking masks usually makes the AHI numbers go higher.

I asked my sleep doctor if mask leaks would make myh AHI higher and was told not always. I wondered about that. - Kim

Your machine must work harder to maintain the prescribed pressure when you have leaks. That may record as an apnea or hypopnea.

I had 3 apnea events last night and 1 occurred at the same time I had a major leak. Coincidence? Don't really know 'cause I'm new. Info on my equipment states that pressures do not rise due to leaks as it would only serve to make them worse.

Just a note of interest - hypopneas are my problem and I have proven to myself that a small cough into my FFM will score one for me, as will throat clearing, etc. I'm learning.... I only threw that in there due to the topic - I thought folks interested in leaks would appreciate that tidbit.
