Re: Will a Nasal Mask work with high pressures?

In my experience using nasel pillows type masks, when I first started using the ResMed Swift (the original) at a fixed pressure of 18 at the time I had NO problem using it at that pressure and it was comfortable without tightening it up at all, just snug fit! So IMO, I think would handle your pressure range! Also now that the Swift has progressed from the original (which was a single wall pillow) to the Swift 11, Swift LT, and now the Swift FX, which I have been using since it came out, is the most comfortable pillow type mask for me, has duel wall pillows which has resulted in a pillow type mask which is very comfortable and leak free and handles pressures well! Maybe other forum members will post advice reference the straight nasel masks, and/or other pillow type masks as far as comfort and handling your pressure etc!
Hope this helps!

All the best!
Steve,

This is something I'd like to know as well. I just got my CPAP yesterday and the mask is a Quattro Full mask. Even at a size small if it too big and has leaks unless I crank it down very tight. Then it really hurts my face. I ended up taking a painkiller just so I could tolerate the mask. My doctor told me I could use the pillows and that's what he wrote for, but the RT that supplied me yesterday said that a nasal or pillows mask wouldn't work at my pressure (14). Anyone else use a nasal mask or pillows at that pressure?

Katy, this is BS.
14 cm pressure is certainly very easy to use with nasal pillow masks. I use APAP. While my minimum is 10 cm, my maximum is wide open and I often see 15 and above and I don't have any problem at all using the nasal pillows. Not once has it ever been blown off my face. Even when I hit 19 cm. Lots of users use the pillows at higher pressures.

There is absolutely no reason for a mask to be so painful that it requires pain meds. Make the DME give you want you want to try. It may or may not suit you for any number of reasons but your 14 cm of pressure is not one of them.

Thanks so much! I'm going to call them and make them give me something that fits without pain.

Katy, you have yet another DME full of baloney. Nasal pillows will work fine even at high pressures. They are much more comfortable and much less leaky than a FF mask, especially the Quattro. So call that lying DME and tell them you want the nasal pillows the doctor ordered, and call your doctor to complain that the DME did not fill the Rx as ordered.

If you need to use the Quattro one more night while waiting for your nasal pillows, check out "Taming the Mirage Quattro" in my signature for tips. I also have tips for the Swift FX nasal pilllow mask if you get that one--helpful for the LT as well.

My pressures regularly go to 15 and I'm very comfortable in a nasal pillow mask. The trick is that they must be fit properly, and I wouldn't trust your lying snake of a DME to know how to fit them properly (which is probably WHY he thinks they don't work at higher pressures). Be sure you watch the online video for whatever brand of nasal pillow mask you get and my tips referenced above will help, too. If you get any of the Swift masks, they all come with THREE sizes of nasal pillows, so you can find the right ones for you. Don't let your lousy DME decide what size you need and remove the rest from the package!

I had success with my Swift FX last night. I only woke up twice because of my mouth opening. And I woke up a couple times because it would leak when I turned on my side and had to adjust it.

Although my favorite mask is the nasal prong at a pressure of 14,my motherinlaw has used the Resmed Utra Mirage nasal mask at a pressure of 23 for the last 6 years. So do not feel that you have to use a full face unless uou are mouth breathing.

I use a nasal mask and I have the same pressures, 21/17. I cant get a FFM to seal with these pressures and have had much better luck with my nasal mask.
