Re: PR System One users - What humidity? (0 - 5)

Post by robysue » Tue Apr 05, 2011 10:14 pm

Well, I am at the other end of the pressure scale with my PR S1 BiPAP Auto (min EPAP = 4, max IPAP = 8), and I don't run out of water or even come close to it with the humidifier set anywhere between 0 and 4. [I've had trouble finding a sweet spot.]

Your high pressure might be part of the problem---since higher pressures are attained by blowing more air through the humidifier in the same amount of time.

The room's relative humidity and temperature could also be a big factor: How warm is your bedroom? How dry is your bedroom?

I have my PRS1 humidifier set to 2. Pressure range 4-18 (it is an APAP, not a BIPAP though), with a90% around the 14cm H2O mark. I fill my tank every evening to full (tap water can't seem to find distilled water around here, but I clean it every morning when I get up). After 7h30 to 8h sleep, it is still between 50% and 75% full. Room temperature between 16° and 18° Celsius. Humidity medium to low (at a guess!!).

Hi,

On the PR System One xPAPs it is a little more complicated then just "what is my Humidifier Setting?" There are two very different types of humidity control.

1. System One Humidifier Control - Uses Room temperature and Room Relative Humidity sensors to monitor and adjust (read this as reduce) heat to the humidifier so that "rain out is prevented.

2. "Classic Humidity Control" - System One Humidifier Control set to "off" in the "Provider's menu" on my unit the humidity level indicated on the LCD display will show a "C" in front of the number (like C1 or C4) to indicate Classic Humidity Control (my unit is the updated unit with the lit LCD display.)

Classic humidity control tends to use more water at a given setting (e.g. "C2" -vs- "2" where C2 is "Classic" humidity level of 2 (similar to tthe "M-Series Integrated Humidifier) and "2" is "System One" humidity control at a setting of 2.)

I can run my unit at a System One Humidity control setting of "5" for 11 hours and still have some water left (in Michigan during the winter with a cold bedroom) and I get no rain out. If I use Classic at "2" I can get about 10 hours and sometimes I have a little water in the mask.

Cheers

My setting tends to be about 8.8, humidity dial at 3. I go through about 25% of the chamber per night. I would expect that a higher pressure would cause faster evaporation (windier days cause things to dry out faster) but I would also expect that they would have built the chamber to give enough water for that.
