Any mask suggestions for a person with a big nose?

Post by sierragail » Sat Apr 02, 2011 6:30 pm

Hi All. I'm writing for my husband. He started on the S8 Elite last fall. He's really glad to be using it, but he hasn't had much luck with any mask so far. He has tried the FlexiFit HC407 Nasal Mask, Respironics ComfortGel Full Face, and the ComfortGel Blue Nasal CPAP Mask. All of them leave his nose black and blue, and sometimes even the skin is broken. And he has leak issues with all of them. If he wears the masks more loose, so his nose doesn't get damaged, then he has leaks all night long and doesn't get much benefit from the machine, with apneas as high as 15. We don't have insurance, so going to a rep for advice is not an option. He thinks he has narrowed down his problem to the fact that he has a large Aztec nose on a relatively small face. I printed out the paper sizing guide and took his measurements and for all the masks he has tried, he has measured out to need a size small. He has also tried the FlexiFit HC432 Full Face in medium but it was way too long for his face, so size small does seem to be his correct size. It's just that his large Aztec nose is not small at all! Does anybody have mask ideas for a person with a small face and a huge nose?

I forgot to mention that he has also tried a nasal-pillow mask and he absolutely hates it. He said he feels like he's smothering with it on and his apneas were actually worse than with any of the other masks.

Maybe a hybrid? Nose size is irrelevant and it comes with all size combinations.

I'll go take a look at them right now. Thanks for the suggestion!

I bought a resmed SoftJell Blue medium and it seems to large for me now that I have had it awhile. Perhaps the Larger Version of this would work.

I don't like it so much, but its perhaps because of the fit...and..I actually really like the nasal pillow style. I tend to put my hands over my eyes and forehead a lot and regular masks don't allow me to do it.

If you mean by "Aztec" nose that he has a large nose bridge, I think I can help you. Take the cushion off the mask and hold it to your face, standing in front of a mirror. Can you see where the silicone is stretched tight, digging into the nose bridge? What makes it bruised is that it is cutting off the blood circulation in that area. What I have had to do with all of my masks is cut the silicone at the top of the triangle to enlarge the opening. Can you see it here, on the SoftGel?

Then get a nosebridge protector from padacheek.com

Just cut a tiny bit at a time and try it on an old mask, making sure you already have a replacement, in case you cut too far in.

Check this in small size. It's deep and has a forehead adjustable support to lift the mask off the nose:

Hi I meant the full face here in small size:
