FF, Nasal or Pillow Settings on CPAP Machine

Post by Wanttosleep » Wed Mar 23, 2011 11:03 am

Good day everyone. I have a question about machine settings. I hope I am able to explain it clearly.

I am going between a full fase mask and a nasal mask to try and determine which works best for me. I noticed that my machine has a setting for FF Mask, Nasal Mask, Pillows or Ultra Pillow. Do these settings make a really big difference for the type of mask you're using? I forgot to change the setting when I went from FF to nasal and can't say that I felt any difference.

Just wondering...

I don't have a ResMed, but yes, I've seen posts here where people are having issues and told to make sure that the mask setting is correct.

It doesn't seem to make any difference at all on the Philips Respironics machines, however.

With ResMed machines the mask setting will affect the leak rate only because ResMed subtracts different vent rates for each type of mask before reporting. Full face masks typically have a slightly larger leak rate than say a nasal pillow mask. It doesn't affect therapy though so if you forget it will not harm therapy one way or the other. Only might give a slightly misleading leak number.

There is some discussion in this thread and on the linked audio file about the interviewed doctor's opinion of the effectiveness of different types of masks based on his experience.
