CPAP and Coughing and other questions

Post by HisServ » Mon Dec 19, 2005 1:33 pm

Hi guys. I haven't posted here in a while, but I have a couple of questions for all of you. There seems to be a period of time every once in a while where I can't use my mask every night for about 1 week. One night I wake up and I start coughing and I have to take the mask off and I still feel like I have a tickle and don't want to put it back on because I know I'll start coughing again. That'll happen like 3 nights in a row, then the next night I just CANNOT get to sleep with it on. Then all of a sudden I'll be fine again and sleep all the way through every night. My husband seems to think that it's always the around the week that I have my period. Anyone else out there noticed this phenomenon or have any suggestions? Have been using my machine 100% for several months now. Have an Auto CPAP.

Also, my husband notices that I toss and turn ALL the time when I'm sleeping. I never notice anything. Could this have anything to do with restless leg syndrome or something else that someone has noticed?

Thanks for all the suggestions and help!

Hisserve,
Ok, I didn't want to bring this up, but glad you did!!! I'm 48 and my periods have gotten closer together (gearing up for menopause)!!! Ok you guys, leave us alone!!!! I also have noticed that the week before my period, I seem to have more trouble with my CPAP and sleeping. Don't know your age??? It must be a hormonal thing!!!!! I'm going to try using progesterone, maybe it will help??? Maybe someone out there can help us????

I have experienced the tickling in my throat and coughing. A lot of people seem to suffer from this regaradless of age or sex. There could be a couple of causes that I know of. One is a mild nasal drip and the other is mild acid reflux disease. If the tickle gets too annoying, I take an antihistimine before I go to bed and it helps a little. My sister suffered from a constant cough and tickle in the throat when she laid down and was diagnosed with mild acid reflux disease even though she hardly ever had heartburn. Her cough and tickle in the throat went away once she started taking medication for the acid reflux. I'm 54 and have been on cpap for over a year and have only slept straight through the night once in all that time and I think it was only because I had taken Lunesta before I went to bed that night. I have already gone through menopause and doctors tell me that the awakenings at night are caused by age. That may be true but I get the feeling that sometimes they just tell me that to get rid of me and could care less about what may really cause it. I usually wake up once during the night if not more. The good news is that after starting on cpap, I can go back to sleep quickly. Before cpap, I couldn't go back to sleep for hours and then when I would go back to sleep, I would wake up again in about 15 minutes because of the apnea. I wish I could be of more help. If you get any better answers, let me know. I'm still searching too.
