Is it unusual?

Post by dusty0318 » Sat Mar 12, 2011 2:11 pm

Is it unusual for the humidifier to be empty by morning? DME told me every 3 days to clean the chamber with vinegar.

It depends on how high your humidity setting is. Mien is at 1 usually and I have 1/2 of the water left. I rarely clean my tank. I use only distilled water.

If your mouth is also dry, it means you are probably mouth breathing.

It is unusual to use that much water unless you are living in the desert and have the humidity turned all the way up. So I'm suspecting some mouth breathing. Especially since you didn't even use your machine all night.

My machine is an older M/series Apap and does use a lot of water when I have the heat turned on. During the summer I just used it in passover mode but now that it is winter AND I have it set on the lowest setting #1, it uses a lot. I did notice that my nasal mask does not use nearly as much as my nasal pillows and wonder why that is?

I notice that I use most of my water chamber in the winter months when the heat is turned on in the house and even thought it is hot water baseboard heat, it can be very dry in the house in the winter. So, I fill up the chamber every night and every sunday I soak it in 2 parts water, one part distilled vinegar. I also only used distilled water in the chamber. It seems to stay very clean and we have no issues.

Best regards,

Jersey Girl

I keep my humidifier set at 3 (middle of the road) and I will pretty much use all of it if I sleep 8 hours.
Summer months when it is more humid, maybe not quite as much but I almost always never have more than 1/4 of the water left. I add water daily.

If you have a small humidifier tank and use a high humidity setting, it's entirely possible. How often you clean your tank is really up to you. Some people wash everything every day. Others don't wash anything for a month. Suit your own level of comfort vs. cleanliness. Be sure to use distilled or reverse osmosis (RO) water if you want to keep your tank from getting mineral deposits inside it. If all that ever goes into your tank in distilled or RO water and you use the proper filters on your machine, then it shouldn't ever really get dirty and shouldn't become a breeding ground for bacteria or algae.
