Just purchased a used cpap
I bought a machine off of craigslist, is that a good idea? Should I get it professionaly cleaned before using? My insurance doesnt cover so thats the reason why I purchased used.

HI, Did you get a good deal?
Go to the user control panel and put your equipment in your signature as TEXT, someone will come along and tell you what to check on it.

Re: Just purchased a used cpap
Hello,
I paid $35 for it, the outside seems to be in good shape but who knows what the inside looks like, I was thinking maybe I should open it up or spray some disinfectant or something into the unit while its on.

I wouldn't spray anything inside of it. Might mess up the electronics. Wipe it gently with some disinfectant wipes.
If there is a humidifier tank for water, that can be cleaned with warm soapy water, rinse and let air dry.
The hose also can be washed same way.
Might want to check for filters though. Probably would want to replace those.

I see your machine shown in your signature area. Next time you are in your Profile go to the Equipment tab and choose the machine from the drop down menu. Also your mask when you choose one. This is where most of us look.
Will look like mine at the bottom of my post.
Do you know how to get around in the Remstar Plus?
If not, this link may help some with the settings? Have you had a sleep study with pressures advised or are you doing it all on your own? Scroll down till you see your machine.

Great link, I found the care provider instructions online earlier and was able to set my pressure.
I did have a sleep study done and my medical (kaiser) supposedly gets a discount with apria but I wasnt happy with the service or the unit they rented me, correction, I was happy with the unit but wasnt happy that it was a used discontinued model which they quoted me a price which was $200 more than online.....

The Plus machine is a basic machine with no detailed data available except for the number of hours/days used. If you aren't interested in the data, the Plus will work. If you gave $35.00 for it -- you did okay in my opinion. If you know your pressure and how to set it, it can deliver good therapy.
I have purchased used machines and have just changed the filters and wiped the outside down. As far as germs go, the air blows outward so I don't worry about catching something from someone.
Do you have the humidifier for it? If not watch cpapauction as they sometimes have them reasonalble priced and craigslist.

I agree with sleepycarol. You'll definitely need to buy new filters, both the whiteand black kind. You can get them from https://www.cpap.com relatively inexpensively. Beanmescott also suggests http://www.cpapfiltersandsupplies.com. You can buy them individually there. It's really important to replace filters.sleepycarol wrote:The Plus machine is a basic machine with no detailed data available except for the number of hours/days used. I hope you do have a humidifier.

Re: Just purchased a used cpap
For $35 heck of a deal. Last night I kept trying to post about cleaning and filters and kept getting the page not responding message and losing everything and having to start all over. Amazon.com and Ebay will also have filters. Especially Amazon.com. The gray filters are washable so you only need a couple of those. White fine filters are disposable. Depending on where you live change once a month or so as they start looking gray and dirty.
If you don't have a humidifier you might want to get one. While some people can handle the air going into nose having minimal or no extra humidity, most people will need at least some extra moisture. It is a comfort feature that can impact greatly how well you can manage the therapy.
Good luck and keep us posted.

I was thinking that as well, but what about germs that could be in the room that the unit was in?sleepycarol wrote:As far as germs go, the air blows outward so I don't worry about catching something from someone.
Yeah I was prepared to pay $200 for a used unit and was pleasantly surprised when I saw this one, I actually had to wait a few weeks before the seller came back from vacation and I kept checking craigslist for other units but there werent any!
