Help: unexplainable rainout problem

Post by Twentysix » Sun Mar 06, 2011 11:23 pm

Hi, hope someone can give me some tips on an unexpected rainout problem. I always use the humidifier, and had the temp set to 29C. Over summer I have decreased that to 25C, without any problems. The air otherwise felt to hot, since it was already very hot anyway. Now autumn is starting and all of a sudden I had terrible rainout last night. Rainout has been a problem a few times before, but only when I took of the mask make a bathroom visit. On returning the rainout sometimes happened. However, it now happened whithout taking the mask of, while I was on my back. I got a substantial amount of water straight into my nose and had to get off the mask immediately, cause I could not breath. So, firstly I don't understand why it happened. Secondly, I would think that rainout would be worse when the temperature difference between air-in-hose and outside would be bigger, therefore less chance with lower set temp for humidifier. In short, I don't know what the best action would be to take: turn up the temp again, or turn it down?? Just not sleep on my back? Buy a hose huggy and would that help for this specific problem?

My experience with nasal pillows is that they have their own rainout--the air coming in is definitely going to be less than body temperature no matter what you do and when the cooler air hits the warm nose, it's going to condense. Heating the hose and humidifier are not enough to prevent the pillow rainout because you'd have to heat to an uncomfortably warm temperature.

Quite a bit of water condenses in the pillow, and depending on your position it will go up your nose or out the vent and spray all over.

The only thing I found that helped at all was Padacheek's barrel covers. This reduced the rainout in the pillows themselves by about 50% (but did NOT eliminate the problem) and took away that wet dog nose feel of damp silicone against your nostrils. She sells a short hose cover with it and the combination of the two helped a lot.

Ditto to what Jankintz says and about the barrel cozy. It helped me with rainout and I was already using a hose huggy.
Why now? Who knows. Relative humidity in the house air plus added moisture that is in the breath we exhale... Humidifier settings? Some people can get by with lower settings. I can't but others do. This is personal preference item.

Hose placement can also be a factor, if you rig the hose up over your head the water can't flow uphill and will run right back into your nose. I use a the barrel cozy and changed the hose position so it hangs down as much as possible.
Still get a little "spray" sometimes but nothing like pouring water up my nose.

This is the opposite of how condensation actually works.

You're right--it's the other way around--warm nose air hits cool air from the pillows. In any case, it's going to have the same result.

Probably something is wrong with the climate line as you do not get Rainout with climate line in auto mode .

Like what? I normally don't get this, and I don't quite recognise the 'wet nose feeling' either. Am usually quite happy with the nasal pillows and they work fine. Last night was fine, but I cranked up the temp to 29C again. The remark about the position of the hose hit home though, because I'm a side sleeper and normally have the hose next to my pillow (so same height), but on my back I put it up over my head. So that may have caused the sudden plunge. Will take care not to do that again.

HI

I had a simmaler problem with rainout . Simple homemade solution took a clean sock cut up the length and sewed a tube cover for just the part of the tube comming from the mask connecting to the main hose that is heated solved the problem completely and easily.

If you can't cover it, can you remove it so that you can connect the climateline hose directly to it?

Had not realised the last bit of hose is, of course, not heated. Duhuh, did not get smarter yet from the APAP obviously.
