Sleep Stage Trackers
Sleep Stage Trackers
Has anyone used either of these? Or a different one? I have not done much research on either one of them, and haven't yet looked for any studies comparing these to lab results.
Zeo Personal Sleep Coach http://www.myzeo.com/ And as of a couple days ago, they have a beta program so the internet uploading isn’t needed: http://zeodecoderview.sourceforge.net/ Price seems to be the same no matter where you buy it.
SleepTracker Pro http://www.sleeptracker.com/ It comes with analysis software. Originally designed as an alarm to wake at the end of the sleep cycle.
I'm looking for some sort of sleep monitor to give me some feedback to see if I'm really getting into the deeper sleep stages. I do not expect this to be as accurate as a lab report, but since I track how I feel and loosely correlate it w/AHI and other data from my S9, I want to add more information into the mix and see if I can get a bit more insight. Basically, I want to learn what a good night's sleep really feels like because I have no idea and so far the good days seem to be random when compared to S9 data, i.e., low AHI does not always mean feeling rested the next day.
The other reason is that I love gadgets and data.

Re: Sleep Stage Trackers
Have the Zeo, and *love* it. Their customer service is second to none. Received answers within minutes every time I had a question.
Been looking at O2 sats vs. sleep phases, sleep phases vs. A/H episodes, etc. Quite interesting. And by far the most pleasant alarm clock that I've owned.
They have a referral program where you can get $15 off. PM me if you're interested.

Re: Sleep Stage Trackers
Forgot to add that they seem to support the Open Source community as well as anything to do with sleep and brain waves. Look here: http://blog.myzeo.com/forum/ A friend of mine has hooked up a Zeo to a microcontroller and is now controlling hardware, and got plenty of support from their engineers.
This I liked the most: "We don't believe that it's ethical for body measuring companies to block users access to their information. " (http://blog.myzeo.com/forum/zeo-decoder ... -in-alpha/). Helloooo, DMEs, are you listening?

Re: Sleep Stage Trackers
I doubt it that it is possible to measure the stages of sleep reliably without the proper equipment such as these:
An excrept:
Sleep Stages: Measures
When a sleep researcher sets out to study the process of sleep he or she generally relies on three fundamental measures, as the basis for defining stages of sleep. First, gross brain wave activity is considered, as measured by an electroencephalogram (EEG). This machine provides the summary of electrical activity from one area of the brain. Second, muscle tone is measured with a electromyogram (EMG) machine. Third, eye movement is recorded via an electro-oculogram (EOG). As we will see, the EEG reading is the most important measure in differentiating between the stages, while the EMG and EOG are most important in differentiating rapid eye movement (REM) sleep from the other stages.

Re: Sleep Stage Trackers
I'm not looking for absolute accuracy or reliability and I said that--of course one of these things is not going to be the same as an in-lab sleep study. It would be silly to think that one of these things would give the same results as an in-lab study!

Re: Sleep Stage Trackers
I'm able to roughly map out REM from my PAP data, though I would sure like to be able to know how much slow wave sleep I'm getting. I don't know that I really need it, though, to adjust my therapy. Not sure that I would do anything different in response to the sleep stage data, so there's no point in my collecting that information.
However, it is always possible that if you had that information available, by making changes in your therapy and reviewing the stages, you could learn what effect those changes have on sleep architecture.

Re: Sleep Stage Trackers
I'm certainly taking a closer look at what they are doing and have sent an email requesting some further technical information however on an initial view I am quite intrigued.
I like that they support third-party software developers and even make API routines available to help with the process. While this may not be equivalent to a true EEG I do believe it may provide valuable information that can be combined with the respiratory information from the CPAP data and the pulse information from a pulse-oximiter to provide with fairly good certainty the sleep stages. If this does as I expect it to then with this augmented data set treatment efficacy or setting change cause-effect monitoring could be greatly enhanced.
I expect I will likely purchase on over the next month or so and see for myself unless I see any show stopper before that. Thanks for posting this, I was not aware of this and had actually gathered the schematics and found a source for the electrodes and positioning details to put together a full EEG. This looks like possibly a cost effective and much more friendly alternative.

Re: Sleep Stage Trackers
For all intents and purposes, it *is* an EEG. Headband, electrodes, you name it. I guess the main difference to a professional EEG is the number of channels (electrodes) and therefore the areas of the brain it can differentiate between. Digital signal processing has come a long way.avi123 wrote:I doubt it that it is possible to measure the stages of sleep reliably without the proper equipment such as these:

Interestingly enough, the "Sleep Cycle" app for my iPhone correlates not too badly with EEG sleep phase data - without measuring brain waves at all. But THAT, I look at more like a novelty...
