CMS 50F oximeter failure - need replacement suggestions

Post by Bright Choice » Fri Feb 25, 2011 9:47 am

Brand new - 2 weeks or so. It quit registering pulse and o2 during the night - saying "finger out" - I tried turning off/on, taking probe out of monitor etc, nothing happened. The screen works but it is not picking up the pulse. I recharged it. Gave it my finger again but it still does not pick up pulse and o2. Anyone else had a problem?

Is the light flashing in the finger probe?

Did you check the connection to the device?
You could try cleaning the inside of the probe and the connector that plugs into the unit.

Hello

Just a thought also make sure that you dont have any finger nail polish on the finger that you use on the probe,i believe that this could interfered with the probes signal

The usual suspect is a broken wire or a bad connection.

If you see the light flashing, that means that the sending part is working. If you can somehow put your finger in and still manage to see the light, it should change from flashing to steady state. If that happens, then that would narrow the problem down to the receiver unit.

Sometimes wires break, crimps come loose, or pins get bent and no longer make a connection.

If all else fails, have it replaced under warranty.

Nope, no finger nail polish.
Since I got the oximeter I have kept the probe attached - didn't want any problems with those wires.
It failed in the middle of the night - I got readings for 4 hours, then nada.
Yes, red light is blinking inside of probe.
No, red light does not go steady when I put my finger in it.
It charged all day - so that should not be a problem.
I thought I had done a fair amount of reading on cpaptalk about oximeters and it seems like many were using this one. I'm going to explore the warranty but this was an ebay purchase - we'll see.
If I have to buy another one - any suggestions re: other brands?
Thanks to all of you for your comments.

Since I may be buying a replacement oximeter soon, I'd like to see a poll on who is using what and are they happy with it? I have not idea how polls are created. Anyone want to help?

If the red light doesn't go steady, there seems to be a connection issue.

There are two different camps. On one side the finger tip units have no connections to have problems, but they are bulky and are harder to keep on your finger all night. The other side uses the wrist mounted units with much less bulky sensors, but with more connections and a wire that can give problems.

I have been using the CMS50E and have had very little issues with it, but I have to admit that there are nights when I find it on the floor because I have flicked it off of my finger. It is too bad that they can't incorporate a sensor into a mask so there would be no additional equipment needed. Until then, you will just have to decide what suits you and go with that.

My problem with the finger pulse unit, besides keeping it on, is that during the night my finger starts to hurt, like it's cutting off the circulation. I have been able to switch fingers, but the additional arrousals kind of defeats the purpose. I just ordered a wrist unit.

Looks like I will order a new one and then see what happens to this one. What do you like? I want one that records overnight and not super expensive. Thanks!

You may have discovered why it was on eBay....

well the CMS 50E was a POS - had 2 of them - both were bad - vendor replaced the first and the second one turned out to be even worse than the first ----

As a contrary perspective... I have had my CMS 50E in daily use for about a year now and it works great...
