System One
System One
I have been on CPAP for 12years. I am on my 3rd machine which is an M Series Cflex with heated humidifier .
I have the opportunity to upgrade to a System One for a nominal cost. Does anyone have experience with these machines and able to say whether the System One is a better machine with better features than the M Series.
Any input is appreciated .

Re: System One
The system one by Respironics has a flaw that occurs in the intake, It doesnt happen on all of them but the flow intake can cause noise when you exhale thru the machine. The company is developing a new one with the help of Bose to curb it, Not sure how far down the line they are talking about, the system one came out last year i believe.

Re: System One
I have a PR System One and have been using it for about 90 days. I like it because it responds to the way I sleep, the heated humidifier very effective, and is very quiet. That being said, I should mention that just because it "splits" into 2 halves, ( airpump and humidifier ) you shouldn't assume that operation is the same connected vs unconnected. I travel and figured that I'd leave the humidifier home to save space: NOT ! Just like a muffler on a car, I found the humidifier quiets the noise coming down the tube quite a bit and I find it too noisy without the humidifier. ( not to other occupants of the bed, my wife can't tell the difference, BUT I CAN ! ) I bought a second, used machine to travel with.

Hi Leadhead,
If you are looking at a used machine, or your supplier still has an inventory of the 2009-10 model, then the concern Redrite mentions is something to consider. I got fed up with the inhale/exhale noises of my old one, and thought it was worse than an M-Series with Cflex on -- but others on this forum kept insisting theirs were quiet. I no longer have that machine, I just got a newly-manufactured one.
It appears PR System One models built since late Fall 2010 are updated with enhancements to reduce the sounds. A different intake gasket, and turning vanes in the crook of the blower housing for example. If the "Phillips Respironics" logo is above the LCD on the white part (not on the front edge of the machine) then it is an "enhanced" and newer one. The LCD will have a backlight too. I find the new "fine" filter reduces sound as well. But do I put it on top of my bedstand? NO. (never did with M-Series either).
The humidifier note is one I'd forgotten, fastwingguy. Thanks for mentioning it. I'd done all sorts of experiments with my old machine and had even come to the conclusion that the water level being lower was even better for "muffler" results than when I filled it all the way. I haven't had my humidifier off since then, so had forgotten.
Edit: I forgot to mention, an advantage of System One over M-Series is that if you have at least the "Pro" model (or Auto) the machine records the breath-by-breath waveforms to the SD card. You can see this in EncorePro, or the audio program "Audacity" or on cpapdork's online data-analyser.

Re: System One
I can't speak of how it compares to the M series, but I have had two System One machines (one apap, on bipap), and I have been extremely happy with them. I do not find them to be loud at all. They are comfortable to sleep with. I also like the data capability. I would say if it is a nominal cost, I'd go for it.

I purchased a System One Pro as a backup unit, and had intended to take it on a 10-day cruise we're leaving on next week. My primary machine is an S9 Autoset. The System One does seem better built and must sturdier...that's why I planned on taking it. I slept with it the last two nights, but the inhaling/exhaling noises are much louder than the S9 and kept me awake much of the time. So, I'm going to take the S9 with me instead.
Since I bought this used, I'm sure it's an older model. The picture looks just like that posted in the link on your post, is it a picture of the older model?

Re: System One
Hey, SleepyCPAP! Have you had any problems w/some nights the waveforms not being available? And/or noticed that there are breaks in the wave forms where it appears that the PR S1 is stopping and then starting on its own initiative again?? And, yes, that would be when AutoOn and AutoOff are turned OFF. It would be interesting to know where that stopping/starting on its own initiative has been corrected in the newer models w/the backlit LCD.SleepyCPAP wrote:... My wave form data is sometimes chopped up into multiple files---even when I have NOT turned the machine off. And my AutoOn and AutoOFF are both turned OFF. But I don't think the breaks correspond to the S1 turning itself on and off: On the few occasions where power has gone out or my cat's accidentally turned the S1 off by landing on the big round button when using the night table as landing zone, I've woken up almost immediately, and that's not happened anywhere near as frequently as the breaks in the wave form data occur. So my guess is there's some kind of flaw in the software that causes it to drop a bit of data now and then and that's where the breaks occur. But that's just pure speculation on my part.

Re: System One
Thanks, Robysue. I had assumed that it was software just not recording/reporting the data in those sporadic spots too - but there are those who say they have actually been woken up by their PR S1 stopping during their sleep - and then had it start up again on its own. So I'm not sure what the two I've used were/are doing - software glitch or actually stopping and starting on their own.
