Swift LT for Her whistling

Post by sewsleepy » Fri Feb 04, 2011 1:19 pm

Folks, I am about at the end of my rope. My Swift LT for Her is comfortable and it works well but it has this annoying problem of making my nose whistle. Sometimes if I keep fooling around with the placement of the pillows, it will stop, but some nights I cannot get it to stop and I can't sleep with that blasted whistle, it is driving me insane. If I take the mask off, my nose does not whistle. But as soon as I put it on, it whistles. Does anyone have any tips I could try?

I use the same mask, and have noticed a whistling noise, too. But I think it has to do with the air coming out of the blow hole at the bottom of the mask. I notice that noise come and go depending on how my covers are placed.

If it *is* your nose making the noise, maybe you need slightly larger pillows (for a better seal)?

Just a guess.

Good luck! I know how frustrating things like this can be.

No specific suggestion as the whistle may be related to the pillow placement. Maybe loosening it a bit? I used to use the LT and did occasionally have the whistle and each time I did I found the pillow had been "cramped" and pulling the pillows out, allowing them to reinflate and then repositioning was all I ever did. Could it be just a tad too squished into the nostril?

Is there any moisture in the nasal pillows or around the vent holes?

I have had these pillows awhile, probably a year (lol) but I am reluctant to replace because I've read the new ones are pretty bad quality?

The whistle really does come from my nose and I can never seem to get a good enough seal with the pillows, even since they were new. Although it looks good on the report (no leaks) I do always feel a slight amount of air movement around the pillows.

I have had the exhaust holes cause a whistle as well before, if they get moisture in them. In that case, drying them out takes care of it. But this other one I cannot figure out.

That was my problem exactly!
Used a trial Swift LT for a few nights. Loved the comfort, but geez the whistling coming from my one nostril! Drove me batty! I expressed the same issue, and all my attempts at adjusting did not seem to help. I suppose it's *possible* that the trial pillows were older? Don't know. But it was just one nostril that consistently whistled. If I knew of a way of rectifying that, I would switch to it!

Is it possible that the inner piece of the pillow is inverted? I had that happen....all of a sudden I couldn't get a decent seal. Each nostril pillow is actually made up of two layers, and I discovered that the inner layer can be pushed down and out of position. Easy to fix by just pushing it back up.

I also got a much better seal when I moved to the next size up. Didn't make much sense to me, but the larger pillows sealed easier and held better...less of the pillow was in each nostril.

This is why I never left the DME with this mask - the whistling was obnoxious. It was the one I intended to get, but I couldn't take it. I ended up with the Opus instead.

I've been using the LT and really like it but I'd have problems with whistling in early am and it seemed no amount of adjusting would help. Last night I tried the next bigger size - medium - and it worked perfectly. When measuring, the medium looked too big, but using it it worked just fine. Very very comfortable.

Also, look for inversion of the inner tube as mentioned previously, especially if you are having it on one side only. It took me a while to catch onto that.
