Snored last night once with mask on!

Post by newyorknative » Thu Feb 03, 2011 9:14 am

I was really freaked out last night. after 1.5 hours of sleep last night, i rolled over onto my back and heard myself snore. How could this be. I was so upset, I did not sleep the rest of the night. In the five years I have been using my cpap, that is the first time I snored.

Don't beat yourself up over this. Tis common, especially for those of us that use some sort of nasal mask that leaves our mouths uncovered. Bet you have even done it before on occasion and did not know it. Rare episode is nothing to get upset over. Yes, it does affect therapy somewhat but rare episodes are no worse then waking and finding that the mask needs adjustment. It is hard to stay off our backs all the time. If it persists and you feel it is affecting treatment you can always add some sort of chinstrap and see if that remedies things.

Have you had another sleep study in that 5 year period of time? It could well be that things have changed and you may need to see if you need a different pressure.

Do you have the same machine you got 5 years ago? There have been a lot of changes in machines in the last couple of years. It may be that one of the newer ones would be best for you now. The Plus model that you have gives no detailed data so there is no way to analyze what it going on.

It happening once is not a cause for concern though. If it continues to happen on a regular basis you should look into it.

Sorry if this is a thread hijack... Are we not supposed to sleep on our back? I actually like sleeping on my back, but stopped because of my snoring. I too snored once with my nasal mask on, that I know of. My wife reports that my snoring has stopped, except for that one time.

There is no certain sleeping position that is forbidden. Sleeping on the back (supine position) in many people increases the chance to have more events. Some people it makes no difference at all. Sleep labs encourage the supine position during sleep studies and titration study because it is commonly the worst case scenario. I always start out on my side and sort of fetal position. It is a comfort thing for me due to back issues. Sometimes I do wake up on my back. Mask will have maybe slipped a bit during the movement. Hubby reports that when I do this sometimes I have snored. Did I have a leak from mask movement? Did I have an event because I was on my back and got restless and caused the mask to move? There really isn't anyway to know for sure.

If you like sleeping on your back and feel well rested and minimal problems on reports, then by all means sleep that way. But if you are having problems or wife reports a lot of snores, then you might want to consider that supine might make things worse for you and try to limit supine position for a while to see if it makes any difference.

I have been known to snore on my side too but for sure much more on my back.

We try to find the optimal pressure while you are on your back. Then we know, no matter what position your sleeping, your events should be stopped. Sometimes its hard when the patient doesnt sleep much on his back, then its up to the doctor and DME to monitor you and maybe raise the pressure some to help you feel better. Everyone should be able to sleep on their back if they were titrated properly.

What makes it difficult for me is that I have OCD regarding my sleep. The slightest little anomoly during sleep can throw me into a panic and keep me from sleeping the rest of the night. So any OSA issue gets thrown way out of proportion, where someone else would say, OH I JUST SNORED A LITTLE, AND GO BACK TO SLEEP.

Ahh, understand the OCD sleep thing.

We can tell you not to worry but it doesn't always stop the worrying. Hopefully as you experience each little sleep and OSA quirk your mind will adjust more easily. I just always had the attitude that I couldn't do a darn thing about last night and what I might have done or not done so I just tried to focus on tonight. Easier said than done for you I do understand. I have some other OCD things myself.
