Papillow
Papillow
Thanks for all the suggestions and help that are offered. I have learned so much since I was diagnosed 2 months ago. My neck hurts a great deal from stretching and straining to keep my mask from leaking. I finally bought the Papillow.I got the smaller one since the regular looked huge. The Papillow is like a rock! Oh my gosh! I also don't like that my neck is kinda hanging in on man's land. I can't imagine that I would like the full size as that one is even "taller." Any suggestions?

I really (REALLY) like my Papillow- I have one of each. I use the larger one most of the time (smaller one for travel). I did find with the smaller one that in order to get proper support I had to turn it on an angle. That way I had one of the "points" under my jaw and neck which gave good support, my temple was on the apex and my face/mask over the edge. For these pillows, I think some firmness is necessary, otherwise you sink into the pillow and the mask gets pushed around. But I'm used to a firm pillow already, so it wasn't much of an adjustment for me (not that sleeping with the equivalent of scuba equipment isn't an adjustment in its own right!) I put mine in the dryer to fluff periodically. Other than playing around a bit with the position of the pillow to find what works for you , I can't think of anything else that might help. Lots of folks here seem to like the Memory foam pillows.....

I don't have the small travel size one, but I do have the regular size "double edge" PAPillow. Have been using it every night for the past couple of months. Sooooo comfy.
In the past, I'd read about the pillow being too firm for some people's tastes, and that some had gone so far as to remove some of the filler (unstitching and stitching back up the end.) I had put off getting one for over a year because I like a soft pillow. Later, I read that they're now using less "stuffing", and that the PAPillow was not as hard as in the past.
The one I got fairly recently (double edge) is absolutely perfect for me. Plenty soft enough, not too high...keeps the mask up off the bed just right and supports my neck just right too.
The other night, I thought, "Hmmm, I think I'll use my tempurpedic pillow again for a night." About an hour into it, I switched back to the PAPillow. It really suits me for sleeping on either side as well as sleeping on my back. Love those contoured cutout sides.

Sooo, RG, you like your Papillow better than your Tempurpedic? I was considering the Tempurpedic, but still not sure. Is the Papillow good for stomach sleepers or just side sleepers? I also have a pinched nerve in my neck that occasionally flares up, so I am very picky about pillows as some cause a lot of neck pain.

Snoozie, yes, I do like the PAPillow better than my Tempur-Pedic. I didn't expect to like the PP better at all, since I had liked my TP quite well before. Now the Tempur pillow feels too hard and the double edge PP feels "just right" to me.
I do absolutely love my Tempur-Pedic bed, though. Extremely comfortable!
I guess how any pillow suits each person is just about as individual as how masks fit -- great for one person -- not so good for another.
I like the way I can snug my shoulder up into the contoured bottom of the pillow and get neck support right where I like it. Don't know if that would work the same for you.
Yes, I think it would probably be just as good for stomach sleepers as any pillow can be. I semi-tummy-sleep sometimes with head turned to the side. The curved sides are good about not shoving against masks the way regular shaped pillows do.
Most of the time I sleep on one side or the other, semi-tummy occasionally, and have even started sleeping on my back quite a bit too. The PAPillow works fine for me in any position.
Never have tried the travel-size one. All my comments apply only to the double-edge PAPillow I use.

Snoozie, I have cervical disk problems also - am missing a disk already, as a matter of fact, so I understand your desire to keep things in good alignment. I actually find the PAPillow works well for me in that regard, too. Even if I didn't need the CPAP, I'd find it to be quite comfy. It holds its shape exceptionally well and can be "molded" a little (flattened out on the edge if too high, fluffed a bit more if too low). It will depend on your posture and shoulder width, of course (the usual YMMV disclaimer), but it works well for me. I agree totally with RG - it would be one of the first things I'd grab if I had to leave the house in a hurry (dog and cat in one arm, pillow in the other, CPAP machine in bag over my shoulder... now there's a picture!)

Tummy sleeping
Snoozie,
Since getting the PAPillow I'm finally able to sleep on my tummy again. I'm a total stomache sleeper, occassionally on my side. Before this pillow, I had to sleep on just my side or back...YUCK. I sleep better on my tummy, so this worked out great! It's also very soft and cushy so the mask doesn't move as much as a normal pillow.

chicagocard,
The PAPillow's soften with time and use,you could put it on the couch for a few days and "break it in" while watching tv, etc. In addition to Rested Gal's suggestion of removing some of the fill, you might find that tossing it in a cold dryer with tennis balls or shoes to beat it up, will refluff it from having been "packed". Like RG stated, "softness" is an individual judgement, and how soft you find the pillow may be relative to what you previously slept on.

Yeah--But I left out the part about the dog weighing 70 pounds! I think I need to figure out another way to get the two of them, the PAPillow, and the machine out of the house. Maybe the dog can carry something?Snoozie wrote:You all have made a believer out of me, I am going to order a PAPillow.
Beth, I am with you on what to take with me if necessary. I would take the exact same things, LOL.
Just thought this would be a good thread to throw in the fact that Sam's Club is selling a Tempur-Pedic pillow for 28 bucks or so....Believe I read in a older thread that someone was "saving up" for one. Not necessary to wait and save with the Sam's Club price and it is the Tempur-Pedic brand. Just sharing a little info .....

Has anyone's insurance paid for a PAPillow (with a doctor's prescription of course)

Jan, Do you know which Tempurpedic pillow is 28 bucks? Is it the shaped one or the one that looks like a regular pillow? Sorry, I forget the names of them.
