My CPAP unit does not have it's own built-in humidifier. Is it okay to use a household humidifier?

I assume you mean to humidify your room, not to connect it to your cpap!

If you are one of those who need a lot of humidity then humidifying your room enough, may turn it into a swamp! The humidity in the hose will always be less than the room humidity because of the air flow.

But there is no problem increasing the humidity in your room to see if your therapy can be more comfortable.
