First night!

Post by vtcpa » Thu Jan 20, 2011 9:23 pm

Hello everyone. I am brand new to all of this.
Got my machine this afternoon, and am sitting here in bed with it hooked up now. I have read through some postings today and have found them extremely helpful. Have a PR Remstar Auto A-flex with the Swift FX nasal mask. So far, so good, but I haven't actually slept with it yet...

I didn't have a clue that I had sleep apnea.....but, maybe it explains a lot. The headaches, fatigue, even the unexplained edema?

Wish me luck, as I am really going to try and be compliant.
Good night!

Welcome to the board! Hope your first night goes well. If not, don't be too discouraged, there are lab rat fixes for just about every quirk or issue and different equipment/products to try if you don't like what you currently have.

Hi,

Welcome to the forum, and congrats on getting started. I was too chicken to use my machine the first night that I had it, so you are already off to a much better start than I was. Be sure to post back and let us know how it went.

Best of luck! Welcome to the world of CPAP. We are here to help. My first night was 6 weeks ago. No more headaches the very first night. If you don't have EncorePro software to view your data on your PC, you can PM me and we can talk about emailing me your data file off of the SD card and I can send you back the report, rather than waiting for the 7 day average to finally show up on the little screen. I am always curious to find out how much pressure the APAP is setting for me and what kind of apneas I am having. I just noticed you have Encore Viewer. Let me know if it gives you your breath by breath waveforms.

Welcome to the forum, vtcpa!

I hope your first night's experience will be a good one. If it isn't, don't be discouraged. Sometimes it can take quite some time to get used to this crazy new way of trying to sleep. It's not unusual to feel even worse than before for some time.

Sounds like you have the right attitude, and you certainly have good equipment.

What pressure range is your autopap set for?

Good luck! Please do let us know how it goes...

Welcome. My first night was Monday night, the 17th of January. I am not use to it. I am trying though and will keep trying. I think its a matter of retraining our brain to accept a foreign object strapped to our head and face and over our mouth. I am sure once the brain understands that it means no harm, it will relax and submit to the therapy.

Good luck.

Thanks everyone!
I think I did okay for a first night. Slept pretty well and kept it on until 5:30 a.m. Could be my imagination, but I feel like I can get deeper breaths this morning in my lungs...also do not have that early a.m. headache that I've been blaming on my sinuses for years. Hope this is all a good sign!

Issues: I did wake a couple of times with extremely dry mouth, so maybe a little mouth breathing happening...I will watch for that.

Wish I had videoed my little dog's face when I put the mask on for the first time...hilarious.
Thanks for the well wishes...my software is in the mail, but once receive it, I will have more info.

Range set on my auto: 5-15. Is this a common range? I have no idea.
Have a great day!

Wow, good for you! I'm so happy to hear you had a good first night. That's quite an accomplishment to say the least. The pressures on my machine are set from 8-15, so I would think you have a fairly common prescription, though there are many others here will know much more than I do. I also woke up the first morning without a headache, and happily, it has not returned after 23 days of treatment. Isn't it wonderful not to have a headache? I sometimes wake up with a dry mouth, even wearing a full face mask, but have raised the humidity levels a little bit and it seems to have improved.

The look on my little dog's faces was hilarious too, especially when the mask was making some leaking sounds, they were both very concerned.

The whole process has a learning curve to it, but it seems you are off to a wonderful beginning. Congratulations!

So happy you had a good, first night. Your range is a little wide, but since you have the software, you'll be able to find out your 90th %tile pressure and use that to guide you. Generally we set our auto range a couple notches below and above the 90th %tile pressure. When you have some numbers to share from your software, we can help you understand what they mean.

If you don't have a copy of your sleep study and your Rx for the machine/mask, you should get those from the doctor. You are entitled to have those for your own records, and the Rx can be good to have when traveling.

Best of luck!!
