"Calist" experiences here make you hesitant?

Post by scrapper » Fri Jan 07, 2011 5:40 pm

Do our collective experiences with individuals like Calist--supposedly a sleep tech who spends the night online harassing people--make you hesitant or nervous to have another sleep study?

Nope. If I ran across someone that acted like a jerk during the setup, I would walk out. I vote with my feet. And I tend to prescreen sleep study labs before I go to them. If they have no clue about complex sleep issues, I don't want to waste my time or money with them. We all have the right - and duty - to vote with our feet. Take our business elsewhere.

None of my sleep techs even remotely resemble Calist.

And I remain unconvinced he is actually one.

The OSA patient died quietly in his sleep.
Unlike his passengers who died screaming as the car went over the cliff...

I have talked to two very nice, sane sleep techs through this site's chat. So for me it is a two out of three positive experience ratio. I am assuming that Calist is some weird statistical anomaly, that for one weirdo jerk like him there are dozens of perfectly normal techs. It never crossed my mind to feel wary about other sleep techs because of him.

Hesitant to get a sleep study? No. Hesitant in some interactions here, yes.

The way I see it, the medical field is no different from any other work group. There will be cohesive personalities and there will be those whose social interactions are uh... perplexing (to say the least). We just don't usually get a chance to see behind the work persona.

I think some people are one of a kind. I did stay up all night long to watch over my kids when they had their studies. I think most parents would do that, though.

Nah...

I mean, 24-hour convenience stores get robbed waaaaay more often than characters like Calist fiddle with sleep-study dials. And I buy milk or coffee at those 24-hour convenience stores without giving it a second thought. Coincidentally that might be where Calist works his next night job if he keeps it up...

It is the unpopular opinion, but I think that Johnny needs to get some control over the chat room. I get that we are all supposed to be adults, and adults are supposed to be able to moderate themselves, but that isn't happening here. What is happening is that someone who has way too much time on their hands is getting off on being rude, making fun of people and acting like a 5 year old. I teach 5 year olds, so I could be considered an expert on how they behave.

I take that back, my students are more mature than the trolls here are. They are probably smarter, too.

If you act like a child, you should be treated like a child. The troll needs to be mod spanked and sent home to cry to Mommy. So, fine, we can remain un-moderated and the troll can continue to make the grown up posters leave the forum, but then they also take their knowledge with them. I suppose a choice has to be made. It seems like Johnny made a choice as nothing here has changed.

Oh, and to the troll: Yes, I need to lose weight. Does telling me that make you feel superior to me? You have no idea how untrue that really is. You can't hurt my feelings, I used to teach middle school. Why not post your picture so that we can point out your flaws?

Because I have already had two sleep studies BEFORE all this happened and I know the lab I use is excellent, this doesn't make me hesitant. However, had I come here before having studies done and seen this situation, I would have definitely had some concerns, especially considering that I am disabled. I need to be confident that any sleep tech responsible for me during a study is doing their job.

But I definitely agree with the other comments. I would always be free to leave if I was at all concerned about the tech. Luckily I had fabulous techs at both of my studies and never had a thought or concern about them doing other things rather than paying attention to their patients.

Scrapper -- nice to see you posting! You've been absent lately.

No effect whatsoever.
Since I tried chat-it's fun, but too fast for me.
Our old, crooked DME is also the sleep lab--the only one covered by current insurance--couldn't change if I wanted to.

Why should somebody like calist scare me away from having another sleep study done? I doubt if an oddball person such as he is could last long in any competent sleep lab. My sleep lab was recommended by a doctor I trust, and my 'odd' person radar works very well.
