Do you use a battery backup device?

Post by Rip Van Winkle » Wed Jan 05, 2011 1:53 pm

In my area, power outtages are common. I learned waking up in a power outtage while using CPAP is not a pleasant experience. I purchased an APC ES battery backup, which works well keeping CPAP running if the power goes out, but unfortunately sounds an alarm. APC says I need to silence the alarm option when connected to my computer, but the folks at APC get very confused when I tell them I'm using the backup for a breathing machine. Anyone out there know of a backup that doesn't have an alarm feature? I've disassembled my APC backup and can not tell which of the wires is for the alarm speaker, so I'm afraid to cut anything. Any advice is welcome.

Rich

The OSA patient died quietly in his sleep.
Unlike his passengers who died screaming as the car went over the cliff...

Hey Rich,

When you open up the UPS, remove the buzzer, you don't need to cut anything. Just physically remove it from the board and it won't make any more noise.

Covering it with tape, painting it black with a marker or the most drastical to remote it from the device.

@TO: What you could try, if the APC remembers the silence-setting or if it has to be set everytime the alarm starts. In the first case you could just hook it up to your PC and disable the alarm-sound and then put it back to your CPAP.

I had one of those UPSs...hooked it up to my computer and in the software I set it to not sound its alarm.

I then put some post-it notes over the light. And, then one morning there was a brief outage....several minutes. The UPS didn't hold up. It wasn't the UPS that my CPAP was on though....so it was just an inconvenience. I replaced it with a bit bigger UPS....a geeksquad one, was also able to connect it to computer and tell it to be quiet. It usually stays quiet...it forgets that I want it to be quiet if it runs down completely. OTOH, I have a Cyberpower UPS similar to the geeksquad one....it is only quiet if the computer is connected and running.

The UPS that CPAP is on doesn't have computer interface, so it makes noise...but just a single beep when power goes out or comes back. Supposed to make noise when the battery is low, but I've never run it down that far (have gone >6 hours on it).

I wish they still made the UPS that I do have CPAP on....I'd like to have a few more (than 6 total that I own).

Hmm, actually I have two of the ESs....
