Air In The Stomach?

Post by DanOtn » Mon Jan 03, 2011 9:04 am

I just started CPAP last November. I'm pretty new to this.

The other night I woke up and my stomach seemed like it was blowing up like a balloon!

Is this my imagination? (maybe it's the holidays)
Is this common? Seems like it could be a serious problem.

Thanks!

..and all night, starting about 30 minutes after hooking up to the blower. The air in the stomach usually is released within seconds of sitting up in the morning. Anything trapped lower down gets released throughout the day. Charming, isn't it?

The GOOD news is there's virtually no aroma as it is air and not digestive gases!

The bad news is, any "looseness" can result in...um..."skid marks".

Or worse.

At least that's what I've HEARD!!!

First I've heard of that! Another thing to look forward to?

I have found that taping my mouth with 3M medical tape (mostly) prevents this from happening.

I don't see how taping your mouth would keep the air from entering your stomach. I have been taping for three years and it hasn't helped with that. But it does keep the air from escaping between my lips, which is something that I can control.

This has happened to me as well but only once or twice 6 months into my therapy. It is very unpleasant and had me scared to go back to sleep later that night and use my CPAP. Fortunately it hasn't happened lately and it's worth the risk of the pain to get a good nights sleep.

I believe the reason I had air go into my stomach was because of a specific sleeping position I was in. I remember waking up with a strange pain on one side of my neck and I hypothesize that my head was not in line with my body and was angled in such a way that the CPAP pressure was forcing open the valve that controls your esophagus thus pushing air down to your stomach. I bought a special cpap pillow that helps keep your neck aligned with your body and I haven't had this happen since then. I am confident that this solved my problem but I am not 100% sure.

Thanks to everyone for there responses!

After 2 or 3 nights of that inflated feeling... I quit using my machine and I emailed the sleep center I was going to.

I had been having good success, averaging over 6 hours a night for about a month and a half. I did not foresee any problems.

After reading peoples responses, and talking to my tech... I thought maybe I just had some bad nights... and I would try it again.

But now there is another problem. I feels like air is trying to go out my ears!!!. I never get ear aches... but this was causing me some pain! So... I've quit using it again.

I hate this because I was doing good. You know when I first started using it, it seemed like the higher pressure coming thru my nose was pulling my tongue up to the roof of my mouth and sealing off air to my mouth. But lately it feels like air is getting into my mouth and I don't have the same sensation of my tongue getting pulled up the the roof of my mouth.

I guess I'm going to have to schedule an appointment, but I wonder if there is really anything the can do?

Is 6.5cm H2o really that much pressure?

Thanks again!

6.5 is not very high at all. Does the pressure seem the same as usual? Perhaps your machine has malfunctioned and is now giving you too much pressure. Is there a DME close by that may be able to test the pressure for you?
