EP 1v8 on Windows 7

Been using the EP 1v8 on an older laptop w/Mako 3500 reader for some time but now can no longer avoid moving to a newer PC running windows 7. Got the error re loading the SQL server as expected. The actual viewer loads fine, but then of course it cant find a server. I've seen some posts a little while back on this topic but would appreciate if someone could give me an update on current thinking, and possibly advice on how to best get the whole thing working on my current laptop.
