OT Why do we feel lousy in the evening when sick?

Post by Muse-Inc » Sun Dec 05, 2010 6:48 pm

I'm just venting...I feel really lousy in the evening. Got laryngitis late last Tuesday (Election runnoff here and I work as a poll manager in my neightborhood...elementary school with hacking kids is likely the source) that became total loss of voice within 10 hrs, then a head cold by late Thursday. Today, I have a sort of whispery voice the rare times I try to talk. I know the treatment is no talking...been carrying a pad of paper & pen everywhere. Thank goodness for the Hybrid but still, coughing ramps up the pressure and increases leaks so I end up fighting leaks as well as getting interrupted sleep from coughing.

Lots of ginger tea, Elderberry tea, oregano in food along with onions, garlic, curry, tumeric in homemade chicken soup....ugh, I'm floating!

Meanwhile, come dark, I feel lousy...why is that? Some avatistic thing harkening back to our ancestors and their reaction to dark? Changes in brain chemistry? Time to go back to sleep? Anybody ever investigated this?

I get laryngitis about three times a year. Not talking is the best choice, as well as the hot liquids you are already taking. I am a teacher, so I have no choice but to talk when I have it in that whisper *my students are four and can't read yet, although I did once put a child in time out using only my facial expression when I had it * and that is supposed to be even worse for it.

I hope you feel better soon!

I'd like to know this as well. Whenever I have a cold it always seems to get worse at night. I can only guess that we are busier during the day so we don't notice the symtoms as much?

I think it's just fatigue. When I was younger and had hay fever I could fight it off unless I got tired or hungry. By the end of the day all systems are gearing down and defences are weaker. At least that's my theory.
What!!? Wylie was trying to eat me.

Muse - - garlic and onion?.

Actually, any plant product from the Allium family, (which includes onion, garlic, chive, leek, and shallot) causes vasodilation, and I suspect is the precise opposite of what you really want when you have a cold.

I'm not a physician, or a herbalist, so I don't give medical or herbal advice. That said, one might consider skipping garlic, onion and anything Allium, in all forms (and it's in a lot of foods and flavorings), altogether, to see what happens.

Good luck with the URI.

Fevers tend to go up at night too. I've always heard that it's part of our "circadian rhythm" whatever that means

OK, I'll give it a try starting tonight. Getting better, voice is 80% back, still hoarse so avoiding talking what a challenge
