It's the treatment of choice if you cannot be managed with AUTO or BiPAP. I delivers timed backup respirations if you do not take a breath in a certain amount of time. It used to be someshat rare, but I am hearing about more and more people using it. It is the most advanced and expensive modality. It is not something I would try to titrate myself.

VPAP is the Resmed name for what Respironics calls BiPAP.

VPAP Adapt SV is a different animal.

If you were diagnosed with ComplexSA, then treatment choices often include the need to determine if CPAP and/or BiPAP can not address your problem. Sometimes the use of CPAP and/or BiPAP will resolve the complex sleep apnea. However, if that fails to address the problem, then an adaptive servo-ventilator is the next step generally recommended.

Rested Gal has a wonderful set of links on central apnea:

viewtopic.php?p=22702

Under it I listed a set links about Complex Sleep Apnea (ComplexSA) or sometimes referred to as Complex Sleep Apnea Syndrome (ComplexSAS). Some papers you might want to read include:

Complex Sleep Apnea: It Really Is a Disease
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/article ... .5.403.pdf

The Quest for Stability in an Unstable World: Adaptive Servoventilation in Opioid Induced Complex Sleep Apnea Syndrome
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/article ... .4.321.pdf

No doubt other articles have been written since I added those links. You can use Google Scholar to search for such papers:
http://scholar.google.com/scholar?q=complex+sleep+apnea

Included in that search is:

Adaptive Servoventilation Versus Noninvasive Positive Pressure Ventilation For Central, Mixed, And Complex Sleep Apnea Syndromes
http://www.resmed.net/us/documents/Morg ... ilevel.pdf

Hope that helps!

Thanks for those sites.

This is very interesting. Here is another site that I found to be very enlightening.

Ditto on that site! I will add that to Rested Gal's Links of Central Apnea.

That site is nothing fancy, but it has great information.
