??? Resmed Humidifier S9 - supposed to heat ??
I have the Resmed S9 Autoset and the humidifier. Is the air that passes through the humidifier supposed to be warm or just humidified? I have mine set at 2.5 and I guess its ok...how do you know? But the thing does not heat up if its supposed to (I am not sure) - the bottom of the humidifier chamber is metal and it is ice cold all the time. Yet every morning I see this little pink line across the bottom of the display screen which says "cooling down" ~ so what is cooling down? Last night I slept 9 hrs and AHI was 1.9 - if that seems fine do I need to worry about anything else? I do not have the heated hose - I have slimline hose and a hose cozy and get absolutely no rainout issues -before I got the cozy I had some but not now. Just need understanding of how this is supposed to work. I do not see anything on the machine to say it will heat the water up so maybe this is correct? But what is cooling down? Thanks anyone...

My S8 heats up and I wouldn't put it on any nice finish.

The humidifier works by gently heating the water in the reservoir, thereby boosting its vapor pressure (tendency to evaporate). There's a heating element beneath a metal plate in the reservoir unit that the metal bottom of the reservoir sits on. The air blowing across the warm water picks up the evaporated moisture which is either delivered to your mask, or it condenses along the way forming what is commonly referred to as "rainout." The heated hose heats the air after it's been humidified, preventing, or at least minimizing rainout. Snuggie hose covers are of negligible benefit, in my experience. Just too much surface area is available to cool the air. You really need a heated hose to keep the air warm.adksleepygal wrote:I have the Resmed S9 Autoset and the humidifier. I travel between home in warm southern Calfornia and my wife's home near Seattle where the banana slugs roam. Rainout isn't a problem down South. But it definitely is in the colder climate. So I picked up a Climateline hose and am very pleased with it. The default temperature is 80 degrees F (27C), which is too warm for me. I like 76F. It's well worth the money spent and I haven't had any of the problems that have been written about elsewhere on this forum regarding durability of the Climateline hose.

Go into the clinician's menu and turn Climate Control to Auto. Then when you turn the machine on instead of seeing a humidity setting you will have a temperature setting. Set it to whatever is comfortable, probably 75+. You can run the unit in manual mode and that's probably where yours is set now. With a humidity setting of 2.5 it may not need to heat the water to get sufficient vapor into the air stream for that setting.adksleepygal wrote:I have the Resmed S9 Autoset and the humidifier. The controlling guide as to what is the right setting is your comfort. Do you have dry mouth during the night? If so a higher humidity level will help.
You do have a Climate Control tube, right? Make sure it is turned, after it is pushed on to the H5i, so that it makes full contact with the electrical connectors.

You wont get much, if any, warming of the air flow unless the humidifier is running more or less at maximum settings, as there is simply not enough area on the surface of the water in the tub to transfer any significant degree of heat to the air.
The "cooling down" process blows a low volume of air through the system while the heat in the humidifer is switched off. This is to prevent any vapour getting back into the S9, and to cool the water in the tub down to a point where it is at or below the temperature of the interior of the S9 to avoid any condensation occuring inside the S9.
Cheers,
Bill
It is just humidified.adksleepygal wrote:Is the air that passes through the humidifier supposed to be warm or just humidified?

If the interior of the S9 is cooler than the water in the H5i tub and there is no air movement, water vapour may condense inside the S9.adksleepygal wrote:But what is cooling down?
