Shoul I try it again?

Post by weaveroflight » Mon Nov 29, 2010 4:11 pm

I used my CPAP faithfully for 6 straight months. I knew it would make my life better. I tried 2 different masks, had all the fittings and so much more trying to have good results. I could see no change in my life from using it so after having a bad sinus infection I decided to give it up.

However I am going back to the doctor soon and would like to give it one more shot. I am using a nasal spray to help my allergic rhinitis and taking a decongestant.
I am not excited about doing this as I never experienced anything positive. And (boo hoo!) It is hard to fall asleep as I usually watch TV and I wear glasses.

Do any of you have any good tips to get re motivated?

(I have several other medical issues- Multiple Sclerosis, Diabetes, migraines.)

I don't think cpap will help with Multiple Sclerosis but will or can help with Adult Onset Diabetes and it depends on when you get your migraines. Do you get migraines soon after waking up?

I think cpap will help with your remaining days. Now that you found this site (The BEST on the Internet) and have all this help, why not give it another try?

Welcome and Good Luck

I too, am diabetic and after reading a whole lot of posts here, wouldn't consider NOT using my CPAP for one night. I'm only 6 weeks into this and still struggle with getting used to sleeping with a mask strapped to my face.

Just like I got used to eating low-carb and thinking about every morsel of food I put in my mouth to control diabetes, I will learn to live with a CPAP and come to accept it as part of my life and looking forward to finally feeling fabulous during waking hours again!

I've found that spending some time watching TV or reading before sleep gives me time to relax, get used to the mask so I almost forget it's there. I can fiddle with it to get a good seal and comfy fit.

Like you, I wear glasses and have found the Mirage Liberty mask great as I don't have anything across the bridge of my nose or forehead. There are quite a few masks that leave you free to wear glasses.

Don't give up on CPAP - your life does depend on learning to get along with it. Very few have instant success - they are the tiny minority.

Hang in there, have faith.

I wrote a long reply but when I started to post I saw that so many people got there ahead of me with great ideas and suggestions, I have nothing left to say except that we are rooting for you. We are here to help you with information and support.

Good luck!

PS please fill out the equipment section of your profile so we can see what you are working with. There is no standard mask, your dme must have chosen one for you. If you can find out the name of the mask that would be a big help.

Just a tip... may seem obvious, but have you tried turning your humidifier to a lower setting? A lot of people find it gives them congestion and you don't 'need' it as part of therapy except as a comfort thing.

I found for me to use the mask correclty I have a routine I follow each day
and I found this to work for me.

Before going to bed I wash my face to remove excess body oil : this allows the mask to sit correclty and not slip

In the morning I take my mask into the shower and wash the Silicon part of the mask with my hair shampoo
I then rinse well in warm water and let air dry untill the night : this removes body oil build up and prolong the life of the mask

I have found this to make the mask more comfortable and lower air leaks.

I too am a migraine sufferer. For over 30 years, no doctor ever thought that I really had as many as I did. I averaged 5-9 a week; yes I said a week. I tried every therapy plan, food allergy testing, food journals, you name it I tried it. I saw a new doctor, due to insurance reasons, and he said he believed I had OSA. Of course, I didn't believe him. See, I don't snore. Well, to prove him wrong, I had a sleep study. Yes, I have OSA. After two nights of using my CPAP, I hadn't had a migraine. I am now convinced that 99% of my migraines were due to OSA. That is why I kept trying new masks until the right one fit. I am almost 8 weeks into this relationship with my CPAP, and I have had only 2 migraines in 6 weeks! That is reason enough for me to continue to use my CPAP. I wish you luck. Don't give up.

There are loads of masks that you can use that will still allow you to watch TV and wear your glasses when your going to sleep. Try the full life from respironics. Its a full face mask that doesn't have the forehead bar.

Hi,

I have two tips that might help...

1) Do a bit of googling to find lists of famous people who have died because they didn't treat their sleep disorder.

2) Do some reading on the effects of low blood oxygen, such as causing heart damage, stroke, and brain damage.

Thank you all very much. I am going to try again. I don't want to have surgery that my doctor says might help.
My problem i my MS. I am not doing very well and am having a flare up. Ms is so unpredictable. Using my machine is one thing I can try to regain control.

Good for you. Be sure to make a commitment to CPAP.
