My Adventure with Moleskin - Don't try this at home!

Post by Laurie1041 » Wed Nov 24, 2010 11:49 am

So I am loving my Mirage Activa LT nasal mask, but need some insulation between my mask and the bridge of my nose. I have ordered two products, one is a gel-like thing that goes over the bridge of the nose and the other is the Remzzz's padded cloth thingies.

Last night I printed out the pattern for the gel-like thing and traced it onto some moleskin, proceeded to cut it out and voila! It looked the a perfect facsimile!
I wash my face, dry it, mask is clean and I remove the adhesive backing of my moleskin "nose protector" - perfect fit!

Woke up this morning after another good night's sleep and went to remove the moleskin. Completely and utterly glued to my nose and cheeks! It took 15 minutes of delicate surgery to remove the moleskin without taking flesh with it Result: I have a deep red, butterfly rash on my nose and cheeks, just perfect for Thanksgiving dinner!

Me thinks moleskin belongs in shoes and not on face. One more thing. . . I am waiting for my hose management system to arrive. Last night, I was obviously feeling quite creative and I decided to try to make my own hose management system. I bought the 3M adhesive hooks and someone had mentioned using a rubber band. It looked good, in theory only. Demonstration on the patient revealed several design flaws all leading to acute strangulation! So much for my great ideas. Laurie

LOL, too bad we can't have a reel of "CPAP outtakes"! It would be a hot seller in the holiday season.

Generally, people put the moleskin on the MASK, not on the human.

Ouch, I can just imagine the removal process! That stuff has strong stickum.

Ouch! Try some Vitamin E on that rash....or a really good concealer!

I tried half of a blister band-aid on a fledgling blister on my nose.
Only once. That is VERY good adhesive!

I also have been looking for some comfort. I am tired of lines in my fat little face (What if they become permanent????---OMG they are already setting it up) and puffy beady little eyes. I tried very thin panty liners and it worked for awhile and then they began to slip---maybe tryi;ng to find home base????

Laurie, keep the moleskin that you used if you still have it. It now has much less adhesive on it and can be used subsequent nights without as much adherence. Maybe you could cut a piece to the template, then put it on your arm or some other less sensitive body part, pull it up, lay it down, repeat a few times, and then do it on your face.
Never put your fate entirely in the hands of someone who cares less about it than you do. --Sleeping Ugly

Wadda ya know....?!
I have always cut a small piece off and placed the adhesive right on my nose...
I have never had a problem taking it off....I find the moleskin that I buy doesn't have a really sticky adhesive and works great.

Laurie,

Don't feel bad. I did the same thing early on. And I already had a blister when I put the moleskin on. Yikes! Karen at padacheek.com has a wonderful product called a nose bridge protector that fixed my Activa blister problem. I still had blisters around the rest of where the mask touched my face. Then she invented a mask liner that goes all the way around the mask. Wonderful. I still get indentations on the nose, but no more blisters.

Try a comfort care cushion. Its a small mineral oil based pad (looks like a thin piece of silicone) that will give you a cushion and protect your nose. and it has no adhesive to irritate your skin. They work wonders on a sore nose.
