It looks like someone was in a hurry to get to sleep and pulled the front seat out of a small Japanese car, but pulled some of the car's equipment with it.

I think it's a twitter or texting device that can be used during REM via telepathy. Some people just can't quite bring themselves to ever disconnect completely from the networked world.

Well, seeing as how I'm still working on getting back to REM, looks like I won't be using it anytime soon.

I'm just guessing: Maybe there are sensors in the 'pillow' that detect and compile head movement during sleep--as some kind of diagnostic tool.
What baffles me, is the proximity of the controls. Hit a button in your sleep and everything is all messed up.
