Heated Hose Length

Post by trytryagain » Mon Nov 08, 2010 6:57 am

For those of you how use and like the ClimateLine heated hose. I am considering getting one, but I really need a longer hose to accomodate my set up. Would I be able to add a 2ft regular hose to the mask end of the heated hose, to give me that extra length. Would it effect the war moist air for those last to feet before it hits my mask?

I really don't know. I've got a ResMed Swift II nasal pillow mask and it's got about 18" of tube on it to go along the headgear to the top of my head (and then some). You can click on the link in my sig to see it. Anyway, the 18" or so doesn't seem to be a problem.

There's a small sensor to monitor the climate inside the tube (you can probably see it if you look at the mask end of the climateline tube). Not sure if 2' will matter, but 18" doesn't seem to.

I wouldn't worry about it. The Climate Line will sense the temperature at the end of its length so it should work with any length of tubing attached to it. I doubt you will find much of a temperature or humidity change at the mask.

Put a cover on the 6 feet of hose closest to your mask and try it. The only issue I could see would be if your real sensitive to your current settings is maybe bumping up your temp a notch? I only have 2 feet of my hose available from my head-board hook and don't do too many cart-wheels in bed, so 6 feet is adequate for me. good luck. john

what about putting the 2 foot tubing at the machine end leaving the senor end of the hose as close to the mask as possible.

Best idea in theory, but the heated hose needs to plug into the back of S-9 to get power. john

Uncle_Bob, jlk is correct. There are electronic components/connectors in the H5i that connect to one end of the climateline. The other end of the climateline is where the sensor is. No leads are exposed there.

The climateline turns like a twist-lock elecrical cord end into the H5i. When the contacts make, well, contact, the S9's display shows that the Climateline is enabled.

I would think you could use 18 or 24 inch length humidifier hose and a coupler to add the extra length to the end closest to your mask?

I'm curious myself cause I would like a little more length. I sent in a questions to CPAP.com lets see what kind of answer we get.

Yes, I have a humidifier hose that's about 18 or 24 inches and a coupler, I had been using it to add length to the regular 6 ft. hose. I just wasn't sure how it would affect the climateLine hose. I guess it shouldn't matter much since the nasal pillow masks have their own small hose permanently attached. I'll check back to see what they said.

ResMed recommends against putting a cover over the ClimateLine Hose.
You probably should cover the 2' extension, however.

I have never used a Climateline hose but can tell you what I know from experience. It sounds like the only place to add a hose (and have the Climate line work) is at the mask end - IF the hose diameters are the same and the connector fits.

The only problems I see are -
1. the moisture will condense on the cooler part of the hose, so covering the unheated part will help.
2. If you have an auto or use Flex or EPR the extra length can affect this sensitivity.
3. You will loose pressure when increasing the length. This can result in unsensed or untreated events.

Adding just 2ft to a 6ft hose may not cause a problem but if that length also has another 18in hose as part of the mask you may in fact record a 0AHI but feel like crap because your events are not being treated. So continue to use the way you feel as a guide and if possible not go more than 8 or 10ft.

If using straight cpap without all the fancy stuff - increasing you pressure a bit may be all that is required for the extra length.

I have added an 18" regular hose with a swivel in-line connector to extend the heated hose. There is no change in results except that I now can roll over without dislodging my mask. IMO, a 6 foot hose, heated or not, is too short.

A swivel is extremely useful. Many masks include a swivel as part of the mask or mask hose. Respironics had an elbow swivel with the M series which was a great help.
