Newbie from Australia saying Hi.
G'day all.
Been lurking for a while getting the feel for the forum, before posting.
This place is unbelievably full of advise and experience, and just found some good humour too.
No, i'm not posting anything about the panty liners to stop creases in my face, lol.
I have been using my machine for about 3 or so weeks now and definitely feel better for it.
On tuesday i'm going back to hospitel for a second test, where they'll wire me up, but i will be sleeping at home as there is a shortage of beds.
Going back the next morning to have all the probes and wires removed.
Anyhow, my name is Jon, 63yr old male, married to an invalid wife, 2 kids, 2 grand kiddies and 3 dogs.
Now you know as much about me as i do.
Jon

Welcome from one dog lover to another. Have 3 malamutes myself. CPAP is one way to keep them off the bed. They hate when the exhaust hits them on the face!

Hi Jon
Welcome to the Forum, this the THE place to make sure you get the best therapy for yourself that you can.
I have found the conditions of obstructive sleep apnea treatment here pretty much the same as the US as far as suppliers of equipment go, and my first sleep doctor was very bodgy.
I have also found it cheaper to get my equipment from the US, mainly CpapAuction, but also Cpap.com is well worth looking at.
Whatever you do, when the time comes, get yourself a data capable machine. You will not regret it.
cheers
Mars

Bodgy for Dori
I didn't know either, Dori, and "define:bodgy" did not yield anything. But found a link:

Thank you Mary.
I agree, Julie. The oldest one is around 8yrs, which is my wife's dog, Rusty. It is a male, white fluffy thing, that when you poke a stick up it's bum looks like a feather duster, lol.Julie wrote:Hi, g'day, and welcome. So what kind of dogs do you have (almost as important as your mask ?
1/2 bichon frise, 1/2 llhaso apso.
The next one is thorough bred brindle, male staffy. His name is "Z", short for Zedibias, around 6yrs old.
Last but not least, Holly, same breed, but female, brindle also but only around 11mths old and the biggest pain in the butt, lol. (typical female...ducks for cover)
Thank you cf, and probes may be the wrong terminoligy, but it may as well be, lol.chunkyfrog wrote:Probes? The Aussies don't leave ANYTHING to chance!

Montana, do you have any pics of you all wired up?? (internet speak says "pics or it didn't happen")montana wrote:My Son and his wife and kids live in Australia ...Adelaide. I don't embarras very easily, but this may be one of those times, lol.
Adelaide is a very nice quiet city. Haven't been there since '66, but liked what i saw.
G'day Laurie, thanks and happy to be here.Laurie1041 wrote:Hello from one newbie to another! Glad you decided to join in. So exactly how do I stop those dreadful creases?
Now, about those creases. Hmmm, where to start, lol.
Guess at my age my natural carved beauty lines take care of those creases, without needing anything externally, lol.
At least that is my story and i'm sticking to it.
Thanks for the welcome lbw. 3 malamutes, wow, how do they even fit on your bed, as they're not excactly small dogs.lbw wrote:Welcome from one dog lover to another. Have 3 malamutes myself. CPAP is one way to keep them off the bed. They hate when the exhaust hits them on the face!
Our staffies are able to get on the bed, no probs, but only the female becomes a nuisance when i stir.
All dogs have a different nature, hers is that she MUST lick your mouth to say "hello, i love you".
Fortunately i am able to cut her off at the pass so to speak.
Hi Mars, and thank you for the welcome.mars wrote:Hi Jon

The specialist i'm seeing appears to be ok, sofar. The person in the office next to him is the one i deal with regarding the cpap equipment.
I managed to upset him when i questioned his prices. "A bit below rrp" he told me.
Well, i have news for you Sir. I research everything and your price comes nowhere near what i found on "perthcpap".
S9 autoset with H5i is $1895. As i'm pretty well broke, i cannot afford your pricing, so have a think about how much you wish to charge me.
In this competitive age, we never pay the asked price. They get a kickback from the suppliers anyway, so i'm sure he can match it.
If not, tough, mate.
I made my decision of which machine i wanted, mainly from what i learned here by lurking, reading and some more lurking.
My hat goes off to you guys & girls. This place is unbelievably full of info and advise. (thank you all).

I actually copied it to add here, without realising you found the same, lol.
Bodgy is not unlike dodgie, unless you are talking about a "Bodgie". Gets complicated, doesn't it.urbandictionary wrote:Of poor quality. 2. To fix something work without the appropriate tools, training, or respect for occupational health and safety. 3. A sly person or arrangement
Anyhow, sorry if this post is a bit like a short novel, but wanted to make sure, i answered everyone.wikipedia wrote:From Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaBodgies and Widgies refer to a youth subculture that existed in Australia and New Zealand in the 1950s, similar to the Teddy Boy culture in the UK or Greaser culture in the US.
The males were called Bodgies and the females were called Widgies. Bodgies were well-known for their often loutish behaviour.
Still coming to terms with the method of posting/quoting, etc.
Regards to all

Oh, sounds like we have a 'live' one now! I think it will be fun to read your posts (but don't be afraid to get serious either about Cpap, etc. if necessary).

Hi Jon
I forgot to mention that when using CpapAuction, most sellers will not mention mailing to Australia. What you have to do is find what you want, and ask them if they will mail it to Australia for you if you buy it.
and Hi All -
And what's with this "Urban Dictionary". You need to check out the genuine article -

http://www.koalanet.com.au/australian-slang.html

I hope everyone here realises that I have to process my posts through a Google translator before I send them.
And even then they can still be taken the wrong way
cheers

Re: Newbie from Australia saying Hi.
Hi Jon,
Another Aussie here saying "Welcome to the boards". As you say, there is a wealth of info here. Thanks to coming here from day 1 I found settling into my new cpap life ...fairly!...smooth. Getting the mask comfortable and effective is crucial.
My centre is SJOG, and I find the RTs there extremely helpful, but their knowledge of the different masks is very variable depending on who you get. I love the reviews here, also there's a kind of mask measurement tool to help people find a better mask for their individual features. It takes some time with a ruler and paper and pen - and a helpful friend comes in handy. When the masks initially picked out by the RTs were inefficient or uncomfortable I was able to ask to try the masks I knew I was better suited to. Sometimes the RT hadn't been trained in the mask I asked to trial, so it was helpful to have read all about it here and know the ins and out of it. Of course, I try to do all this maneuvering tactfully! No point in upsetting people who are doing their best to help me.
My sleep physician faxed the script for the machine directly to the sleep centre, and I didn't know any different. Very cosy arrangement for them both. The Aus$ at the moment makes buying from other countries very economical. On the other hand, the after care I've received from SJoG has been fantastic, so maybe for me it's worth it.
Good luck, Jon. You won't know yourself after a few weeks of successful therapy, I promise!
