Ramp Time

Post by trip68 » Thu Oct 28, 2010 7:21 pm

I have my ramp time at 20 minutes.
It gives me a little time to get settled in before the full pressure.

How long do I leave it at 20 minutes?
Do I ever set it for 15, 10 or 5 minutes ?

At some point you will get used to the pressure, and start to find that the ramp bothers you because it will make you feel like you are suffocating. Most of us used ramp less than a week.

Decreasing the ramp time is not necessarily a marker of cpap experience or maturity. It does turn out that some do decide they no longer want or need it. Since it's a comfort feature, it really is personal preference, but not without some considerations. I continue to use it for a very short time at nearly my prescribed pressure. Why? I tend to cough and fidget with the mask when I first lay down, and I don't want that to affect my data. Otherwise I wouldn't care either way. Not sure about all machines but I think I can safely say most don't include ramp data in the calculations for AHI and leaks (if you are using a data capable machine that is).

When considering whether to use the ramp, at what pressure, and for how long, do consider how long it takes you to fall asleep. I wouldn't want to be in ramp very long while asleep because that is not a therapeutic pressure. Also, too low a ramp pressure can make it difficult to relax if you feel like it's hard to breathe. Not good for someone struggling to get used to this treatment.

If you know how long it takes you to fall asleep you can set the ramp time so that it gets to full pressure just after you fall asleep.

I have my ramp set for 15 minutes. I turn the machine on and let the humidifier water warm up for about half of that time, then put the mask on and usually fall asleep during the last half of the ramp.

The difficulty with this is if you happen to get up in the middle of the night and shut your machine off. This means that you have to go through the whole ramp time again, and some people find this uncomfortable. The alternative is to reduce the ramp time.

Many people don't use the ramp feature at all.

My ramp is turned off!!! I think I used it for a day--- the ramp bothers me because it makes me feel like I am suffocating.

Never used a ramp, never used train wheels on my bike as a kid, dad just told me not to hit a tree or get run over, the rest was up to me.

I started treatment at a pressure of 14.5 CM after my chest was opened up. Jim

I used my ramp for about a week, then shut it off as I got use to my pressure. It really is a matter of personal preference.

No ramp for me, thanks. Used it for a week then realized, "I fall asleep in about 2 minutes; let's get this party started!"

However, I DO use the EPR of 3.

I have only been using the cpap for two nights, and i have set the ramp for 5 minutes only. it was initially at 20 minutes, but i found myself waiting for the air flow to kick in before trying to sleep. I actually find the air flow soothing....it is the mask i am trying to get used to.

I have asthma/copd/allergies. I fought with it for 2 weeks. Turned off the ramp and was good to go finally. I think that mine was on 20 minutes when I first got the machine.

The mask does takes time to get used to. It will be the hardest thing to adjust to during your treatment. I am on my third week and I feel like Superman, but still fight the mask sometimes at night with leaks. Good luck with your therapy ! Let us know if you need any help.
