Best Mask I Have Ever Used!

Post by Carmel Bob » Mon Oct 11, 2010 3:48 pm

I've been on a CPAP-APAP for almost 20 years, really, and only recently found a mask that works perfectly for me. It is the Fisher & Paykel "Forma" Full-Face Mask (and I am not employed by the company!).

The reason I love it is that for the first time I don't need to use a chin strap! I have used every type of mask imaginable but always needed an (uncomfortable for me) chin strap - even with several different full-face masks. The "Forma" is the first mask that holds my mouth closed without a chin strap.

I also have a "good mask fit" every night with 8-9 hours of sleep (at most, one bathroom break during the night), and my AHIs are consistently below 2 and often 0!

Lastly, you need to learn how to fit the soft part of the mask into the shell; otherwise, you will have leaks and blame them on the mask.

Just curious as a newbie.....why would you need a chin strap with a ffm?

Yes, that blue eyed beauty is my cat! He is a seal point, bi-color Ragdoll. I adopted him in '08 from folks who could no longer care for him. He is a joy and makes me smile each and every day.

I just picked up the Forma from my DME last Friday. I've been using the Swift LT for Her but my mouth keeps flying open. I love the Swift, but I'm not sure I'll be able to tape my mouth shut every night, plus the inevitable cold where I won't be able to breathe through my nose.

I used the Forma on Friday night and woke up several times feeling pretty uncomfortable. The bridge of my nose is still sore from using it only that one night, but once it stops hurting, I'll give the mask another try with it a little looser.

I picked out the Forma versus the Quatro because of the chin support. Also, the mask seemed much more comfortable than the Quatro overall. This type of mask will never compare to the comfort of my Swift LT, though, and I'm having a hard time reconciling myself to that.

I see this mask by clicking on the link provided in the above quote but not by doing Fisher & Paykel full face mask search on CPAP.com is this mask newer or older, better for most people that require full face mask than Fisher & Paykel other full face masks?

I'm with you on that, skylark. I have a Quatro and a Hybrid but they are both horrible compared to the Swift LT. As a last resort, I ordered a PapCap today. I'm hoping it will hold my chin up so that I can continue to use the LT.

I think it's newer than the 431 or 432.

I'm a big fan of other Fisher/Paykel masks as well.. the Zest and HC407 nasal masks.

I'm new to CPAP and I will be picking up my new machine tomorrow. My DME gave me a Forma, to try out. I'm looking forward to my first night as a "hose head".

Couple of reasons I can think of...

Mouth breathing while wearing a FF mask can dry the mouth out a lot, even with plenty of humidification. You're still getting your cpap treatment, but can be uncomfortable to have a very dry mouth.

A FF mask can fit fine while mouth is closed or slightly hanging open, but if a relaxed jaw drops down a LOT while sleeping, the drop changes the contours of the face ... often to the point that the mask will start leaking badly down around the mouth area.
