Mirage Quattro Mask making me dizzy!

Post by SleepyT » Fri Sep 24, 2010 8:36 am

I finally got a Mirage Quattro full face mask. I wanted one so I would be ready in case of a head cold. So I decided to take it for a test drive...to get used to it a little...and WHOA! I woke up with bed spins...felt very dizzy and slightly nauseous. The leak rate wasn't very bad...had a decent seal it seems...and I didn't change anything else. Pressure still at 8 (no EPR) and I wore my PapCap chin strap. My AHI was 7....and normally it is between 1.8 and 2.3.

Anyone know what could have caused the dizziness...and the increased apneas?

Den,
Thanks for the response. I read thru the thread you attached. So...does this mean I might have better success with that mask if I cover up some of the vent holes? I'm not sure I follow. It would be nice to use this mask because it does seem to be comfortable...but I cannot afford to have another night like that one any time soon!

Did you read the second page?
It was MY impression that the mask actually retains too much CO2. Covering up vent holes would make the situation even worse. CO2 retention could possibly have different results with different people......especially depending on at what pressure they were using........lower pressures would possibly not expel enough CO2.

I'm not saying I have an answer, I was just giving you something to think about. While I thought the Quattro was extremely comfortable, I just never had the best results with it.......and consequently, it's been several years since I've worn mine.

Don't cover the vent holes!!!!!!! Be sure that you are not covering them while you sleep....you might be sleeping with a soft pillow that is covering some of the holes which could cause you to inhale too much CO2...that could cause some of your dizziness.

10-4. Thanks, Den. My pressure is relatively low.....so.....unless I drill some more holes in the mask....guess I won't be using it anymore.

Well, if you DO decide to use it again and you have the same experience, then you would be able to point to something in the mask. Otherwise it MIGHT be a coincidence. If I were you, I'd be tempted to give it another try before giving up. Who knows? Lots of people like that mask.

I use this mask and I woke up in the middle of the night and I must have opened my mouth because the bottom edge of the mask was in my mouth,so, I used a chin strap the next night and I felt like crap the next morning. My events went from 2 or less to over 10. From now on no chin strap for me.
