New Problem after almost 2 years

Post by maskracer » Sun Sep 12, 2010 12:04 pm

It will be two years for me on CPAP come November and I've gotten into a nice groove with the Activa nasal mask. In the last few months however, despite a brand new mask, I seem to be shifting in my sleep and creating leaks and a loud sound of rushing air which awakens my wife. My leak and AHI #s are also creeping higher. Some detail that may shed light on the problem: I favor my left side 90% of the time, and get situated with the mask loosely-fitted, and as soon as it turns on I make adjustments so the mask is neither too tight as to be uncomfortable nor too loose to create leaks. I fall asleep on my left side. At some point in the night, usually about half way through my normal 7 hours of sleep, I am awoken by my wife who asks me to move. At this point I am on my RIGHT side. I turn back over to my left and I'm okay. I am never really conscious that the mask is leaking, but she tells me it is. When I wake up back on my left side once morning comes, I do not notice that there is any leaking.

I previously was monitored to make sure my mouth wasn't falling open, and the sleep doctor determined that my leak stats were not high enough to suggest leaking (I have tried FF masks and can't stand them). ALSO, I should note that I've lost weight (maybe gone from 232 lbs to 220 lbs in the last several months), so I'm wondering if my titration should be re-checked? Any insight into this issue would be appreciated.

Maybe re-check your mask size? Maybe you have lost some weight in your face too? Or now opening your mouth?
Ask you wife for more clues.

You should do both, get retitrated and check mask size and style. After I lost weight my pressure needs were greatly reduced. Using too much pressure was causing my mouth to open but I decided to go with a FF mask and can tolerate it. When I get sick of the FF I switch to my nasal mask but always wind up back with my Quattro. Good Luck.
