Watery eyes with the Quattro

Post by PJ the DJ » Fri Sep 10, 2010 11:25 am

Because I've been experiencing leaks with the Liberty mask, for the past few nights I have been using my back up mask, the Mirage Quattro.

Thanks to Remzzzs mask liners, leaks are not a problem. However, for the past couple days my eyes have been very very watery, immediately after waking up and hours later. I'm not sure what's causing this or if there is anything I can do to prevent it. I am not sensing any leaks at all up there by my eyes.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

PJ

My guess is that you probably are experiencing some leaks around your eyes. Small enough not to be noticed, but enough to cause you problems with your eyes

Try using "Refresh Celluvisc" before you go to bed. I have dry eyes and this helps better than anything I've tried.

Tony, you talking about mask liners like Lisa in my avatar is wearing? Go to remzzzs.com. You can pick up a sample pack for $6 plus a couple bucks handling and give them a try.

Everyone, thanks for your advice. I agree, I think the mask is leaking and I haven't noticed...

Remzzzs dont make a 100% seal. Air gets in thru the porous cotton material. They do stop the noise of leaks for the most part but some air leaks thru anyway.
Do you have the same problem without the remzzzs? You might try a little tape on the top part of your mask to keep the air from reaching your eyes. Stick it to the mask and let it hang over to cover the remzzzs just around the part that affects your eyes. I have a Quattro myself and have used the remzzzs. They tend to let too much air in to my mask when I inhale and feels very uncomfortably cold on my nose area, so i no longer use them.
Best of luck

PJ, This might not have anything to do with leaks because any air blowing into your nose impacts your eyes as well, because there are tiny tubes (tear ducts) connecting your nose and eyes. This is why our noses run when we cry. I've always had dry eyes, and that really became a problem when I started cpap. I use nighttime ointment for severely dry eyes before I go to bed, and gel drops for dry eyes in the morning (and sometimes later in the day as well.) I tried using goggles, but found them insanely annoying, so I switched to a dark-colored headband worn across my eyes like a sleep mask. This seems to solve the problem for me. Good luck!

Yeah. I don't think you have a leak. I think the mask is touching the corners of your eyes. You may be able to pull it down a little way on your nose so that it doesn't touch any of the soft tissue of the eye area, and I think you'll find, if you can do that, that the tears will no longer occur.

Wow,

Thank you all so much for sharing your years of collective wisdom. Newbies like me appreciate it so much, you have no idea. One by one I am going to go through your suggestions/tips. If I could only get the nasal pillows in the Liberty to stop leaking I wouldn't have to worry as much about this... I think I will also call the sleep specialist at my hospital and let her know the problems I am having.
