Ultra Mirage II

Post by kingsnort » Sat Nov 05, 2005 6:40 am

Hi Folks, just thought I would report back my findings of the Ultra Mirage II

It was the most comfortable mask I have worn. You wear it loose, it did not leak. It was quiet. I slept the whole night without waking.
Now for the awful part. After only 1 night it left the most incredible sores on my nose. left right and bridge. I wish I could post a picture to show.
I thought it might be the pressure sores, then last night I used 3M medical foam tape on my nose. Mask felt good no leaks. This morning I look like I was in a fight! Has anyone experienced this. Could I be allergic to the material? I have tried several masks including Respironics Gel and they all seem to leave the same sores although not as bad as the Mirage.
I am getting very discouraged. The only mask that I can use right now is the Comfort Curve. I move around a lot and I find this is not the best for me. I am also a side sleeper which i find the comfort not the best as it hurts my cheek.

Help...

Recommendation by Respironics respresentatives:
For those with sensitive skin, it is a good idea to soak ANY new mask you use for 30-60 minutes in mild soapy water.

It worked for me.

Thanks Ozij
I noticed you use a nasal pillow mask, so I don't think we had the same issue.
I will give it a try. I did wash it in warm soapy water before using it.
I am just surprised that with the 3M foam surgical tape , it did not touch my skin at these points , but still left a terrible red sores even on the side of my nose and not just on the bridge. Its terribly frustrating when you find something that works and then this. There must be some other users out there that have solved this problem or am I just the most unluckiest cpap newbie !
LOL

Kingsnort,
My first mask was Profile Lite - very much a nasal mask. And I really soaked it after the first night, which helped with the burning sensation.

Thanks again.
I should have known you were talking about a mask you used in the past or a second backup mask like a lot of users have.

I also use this mask and have been pretty happy with it. However in the beginning I did not have the right size cushion and it left a terrible red mark on the bridge of my nose. Addidtionally, I would recommend having the hose go up and over your headboard. For me this reduced the weight and pressure I was feeling on my face. When trying this you may need make slight adjustments to the straps and don't for get to try different positions on the forehead support. Good luck!

I clean my mask every night. I have purchased all of my masks from CPAP.com. I even bought my CPAP machine from them. Their prices are great. I wrote an article comparing several masks.

The best mask was the Activa. I do like the idea of a full face mask but had some problems. I talked about them in the article. I would like to see Resmed Mirage Ultra full face mask make a smaller forehead pad. When I lay on my side it bumps against the pillow and I lose pressure.

The Activa has a slightly smaller forehead pad. They are so close in configuration that I tried taking the pad off the Activa to put on the Ultra full face mask. It was slightly different and would not fit.

The Ultra used some quick connects on the top pad that made the pad stick out and lose pressure when sleeping on my side. They should have done what they did with the Activa and just drop the clips on the forehead. They are not needed.

I have talked to Resmed about this. Respironics makes a better machine, but Resmed makes better masks.

I used the Ultra Mirage II but I threw that mask so many times for causing sores and obscene noises that I was able to purchase out of pocket my Hans Rudolph Full Face mask and my readings on my APAP prove that I have very little to none on the leakage.

The only hard part on the mask is the swivel for the hose.

All soft Silicone Rubber.

I have had no sores on my face.
