Melatonin and Dreaming
Melatonin and Dreaming
So here I am spending the Labor Day weekend at my buddy's house, just the two of us. I slept four hours uneventfully and then my usual premature awakening kicked in. I had bought a bottle of melatonin 3 mg pills to try, so I pop one of them, go for a tinkle and then get back into the bed.
I am sleeping in an upstairs bedroom and my buddy is downstairs two doors down the hall in the master bedroom. My bedroom door is closed. About two hours later I am awakened by my buddy saying, "Are you OK? I could hear you shouting all the way downstairs for a long time." I said, "I think so", and then went back to sleep.
I had been dreaming that my family and I were staying in a hotel and I went back to the room during the middle of the day and found the room in disarray and an intruder in the room.
This morning my buddy told me he could hear loud shouting all the way in his bedroom. We were both surprised because I was a long way off and my bedroom door was shut and I was wearing my full face mask.
Nightmares are something I very rarely have and I don't ever remember shouting like that in my sleep. Is this a side effect of melatonin supplements?
(Don't worry about me too much, when awakened I had that intruder down on the hotel room floor and was giving him a good pummeling. )

Re: Melatonin and Dreaming
I have never had any problems with melatonin. My tablets are 300 mcg, when I asked my primary doc what mcg's were, he had no idea.
fwiw -I cut my tablets in half. My sleep doc mentioned that some other substance (don't remember what) is often included as a filler.
Are you sure you and your pal weren't indulging in a few adult beverages?

I have no doubt, how I sleep affects every waking moment.
I am making progress-NOW I remember that I can't remember

If this isn’t rocket science why are there so many spaceshots?

Re: Melatonin and Dreaming
Gumb-head,
A mcg (microgram) is one millionth of a gram and a mg (milogram) is one thousandth of a gram, so I had 20 times the amount of melatonin you did. I have a guide that says to take between three and nine mg depending on body weight and individual reaction.
I had six St. Ides forties at lunch but no more after 2:00 p.m. We biked 22 miles at 6:00 p.m. and did not go to bed until 1:00 a.m., so I think the alcohol was out of my system.
We did eat a heavy Mexican lunch with three different hot peppers and later leftover pizza for dinner.
GumbyCT, Does CT stand for what I think it does?
(That St. Ides is a joke. I had three Fat Tires at lunch.)

Get yourself a Glock .45... next time you dream of an intruder shoot the sucker. No yelling necessary.

Fall colours. One of God's gifts. Life is fragile and short, savour every moment no matter what your problems may be. These stunning fall colours from my first outing after surviving a month on life support due to H1N1.
Re: Melatonin and Dreaming
I take melatonin on occasion and never had nightmares or disturbances like you experienced.
I have had pretty vivid nightmares in the years past before cpap. Thankfully nothing like that in a very long time.
I have not had any dreams of that nature in the 6 months I have been using the gear. At least that I recall
I think when I was involved in stressful situations it manifested itself in bad dreams hard to say.

Try it again in your own bed without the Fat Tires, Mexican lunch and leftover pizza.

Question - how is it that you figure the melatonin played ANY role in your experience? So Well wrote:Gumb-head,

Rooster, I did just what you said and there was no shouting last night. Will likely continue to experiment. So Well wrote: Nightmares are something I very rarely have and I don't ever remember shouting like that in my sleep. Is this a side effect of melatonin supplements?

Re: Melatonin and Dreaming
Gumby,
There are many report of vivid dreaming and nightmares associated with melatonin supplement. Have a look http://www.google.com/search?q=vivid+dr ... 1I7SUNA_en
There is a hypothesis that the patient is actually experiencing "REM rebound" and the vivid dreaming will eventually taper off. The idea is that the patient has been deprived of REM sleep and melatonin supplements improve his sleep and the amount of REM sleep. Having been deprived of dreaming, the patient now "catches up".
Gumby, I doubt that the small amount you are taking has a significant effect.

Re: Melatonin and Dreaming
If I posted "Apples and Oranges", would you think apples play a role in oranges?
But it certainly seems melatonin is associated with vivid dreaming and that was my experience.
