What do you think would happen in your 2nd sleep study?

Post by elena88 » Mon Sep 06, 2010 11:31 am

I was wondering what you thought might happen in your second sleep study if you had one? (lts the first part of a study without cpap)

If you have had one, please chime in!

Do you think that after being on cpap for awhile that your body is so used to being able to breath, that you might wake up
much faster when you stopped breathing?

Do you think your events would be the same as they were in the first study?

Do you think after having one study, you would sleep much better in the second study?

Would you be interested in taking a second sleep study if it were absolutely free?

I am mostly curious about waking up faster during events, because you have now trained your body it should expect to be able
to breath while you are asleep.. it seems you might wake up much faster and not let the events go on so long, but I dont know..

any thoughts?

not sure I completely understand, a first sleep study wired up but with no CPAP would be to determine whether you had sleep apnea and whether it was severe enough to justify a CPAP
if yes then the second study would be with CPAP to decide your pressure

ask your sleep doc, follow up studies are usually done but the time interval varies

I'm not sure why I would have a sleep study, without cpap.
That would be like skipping a night...a big NO-NO.

I know I have OSA.
I know it's not going away, by my daily data.
I know what my pressure needs to be, by my daily data.
I know I'm going to be strapping it on every night.

I don't need to pay another "sleep" specialist to tell me all of the above.
Certainly don't need any of the alleged help from the sleep ctr. I went to.
Certainly not going to sacrifice any brain cells so they can make a buck.

I get it.

I don't think anything would change. When Mike falls asleep in his recliner occasionally, it's no different than before cpap, mouth drops open, snores, breathing stops, gasps, repeat until he he either wakes himself up or I hear it and wake him and put his mask on. I agree with Carbonman, we wouldn't do a sleep study at this point without the cpap.

Lets say my main question is hypthetical...

do you believe that your body gets used to breathing with cpap and thus would you wake up faster and morefrequently during episodes?

If I had a 2nd sleep study I wish it would say that I wouldn't need cpap

I've had repeat studies. When I changed doctors a couple years ago, the new doctor wanted to start from scratch, and I got the idea she wanted to be able to have confidence in the reports.

I don't the answer to your question. Maybe some of the techs will know if they've seen a pattern. But just thinking about sleep patterns and how the brain tends to be habitual, I could imagine that once someone is sleeping well that the brain might be more aware of disruptions that signal danger. For me, once I was aware of my apnea and limb movements, I was much more in tune with them and the presence of symptoms.

yes, that was what I was getting out, once your body is used to breathing normally again, would it react differently after cpap treatment..
would it be more of a shock to it to stop breather, being more "hyper aware..

Elena,

The last sleep study I had about 10 years ago they wanted me to start without my Cpap. I do not believe that I even fell asleep and tossed and turned until they came in after a couple of hours and hooked me up with my mask. After a time your body becomes so used to the air blowing that is feels unnatural without it. It may be my brain is telling me that it doesn't want me to take a chance without my Cpap. I did fall asleep quickly and the results were the same as my other sleep studies, straight Cpap with a pressure of 17. I love my air!!!!!!!!!!

ahh, that is very interesting. For you, it did feel unnatural without the air, and your body noticed it..

but once you feel asleep, results were the same.. facinating, thanks!
